This 1968 Holden HK GTS Monaro has been extensively modified and upgraded into a one-off, street machine. The car was purchased by the current owner in 2011 and underwent a full ground up build with the brief: to build an understated but true 1000rwhp streetcar. The original body was completely stripped and sand blasted before being placed onto a rotisserie. While the body appears quite factory, underneath there is a large amount of custom fabrication including, custom rear shock towers, scalloped floor for the 3.5” exhaust, widened transmission tunnel, recessed fire wall (body number not removed) and modifications to the inner rear tubs to fit some big wheels under the back. There is a subtle reverse cowl on the bonnet as well as some Ring Bothers bonnet pins. Once this was complete the bare metal body was repainted back to its original colour of Silver Mink. The bumpers and badging was all refinished or replaced as were the rubbers. Finishing the look externally is a set of Weld Racing wheels measuring 17×11” in the rear with bead locks and 18×8” up front. The wheels are wrapped with Micky Thompson ET 305/65/17 Radials in the rear and Goodyear Eagle F1 Sports 235/35/18s at the pointy end.

The interior also has a tasteful custom finish with everything inside functional and for a reason. The entire floor including the boot was layered with Dynamat and heat blanket. There is a custom fabricated chrome moly 6 point roll cage with racing harnesses and mounts. The door trims and dash are factory look with an AIM digital dash display replacing the old gauges. The steering column is a chrome tilt item holding a Sparco Alcantara steering wheel. The front sears are new Recaro Sportster CS with the rear seat split into two moulded and bolstered buckets. Splitting down the full length of the interior is a neat custom centre console holding the B&M ratchet shifter. Even the pedals are Tilton items you would expect to see in a high spec race car. There is a host of switches and controls for the different drive modes, boost setting and transmission settings.

Under the bonnet is a fully built, LSX twin turbo V8 engine. The engine itself features a Manley light weight crank shaft with 4.1 stroke, Manley H Beam Conrods, Forged pistons, ARP head studs, Manley Proflo oil pump, C&C ported Brodex heads, T&D shaft rockers, hydraulic roller race series cam and a custom fabricated intake with dual 80mm throttle bodies. Force feeding the engine is two, Precision 6062 billet ball bearing race turbos with 50mm plumb back blow off valves sitting on custom fabricated and HPC coated turbo manifolds. Engine management is handles by a Haltec Elite 2000 with boost control. Expelling the exhaust gasses is a twin 3.5inch HPC coated stainless steel exhaust. The engine is capable of making over 1000hp at the rear wheels and is currently on a mild tune running 12psi and seeing 850hp at the rear wheels. To keep all of this cool required an ARE custom build aluminium radiator, ARE custom built intercooler, external transmission coolers, external oil cooler and some high-capacity fans. There is a host of custom fabrication in the engine bay with various reservoirs, heat shields and custom engine mounts.

The engine is paired to a 4L85E automatic transmission with Compushift CS2 Controller built by Bob Grant Automatics and rated 1000hp. There is a 25000rpm stall converter and custom fabricated gearbox mounts. Power is pushed to the rear end with a 3.5 inch tail shaft with billet yokes. Feeding the rear wheels is a sheet metal Currie diff housing with 9 inch motive gear set and 35 spline axles.  To ensure the car handles well there is a Southern Chassis Works custom front end with Bilstein adjustable coil overs. Chassis rail stiffeners join the front to the rear where there is a custom fabricated four link with Bilstein adjustable coil overs, panhard rod and custom fabricated shock towers. The braking system has also been extensively upgraded to include four-wheel AP racing disc brakes. The front end received 355mm slotted 2 piece rotors with 6 piston AP Racing calipers while the rear has 336mm slotted two piece rotros with 4 piston AP Racing calipers. The Tilton pedal setup integrates a brake bias adjuster in the cabin for extra control.

This one of a kind HK GTS Monaro is unlike anything else you will ever see and combined the best of modern technology and performance with classic styling of an iconic Aussie muscle car hero. The owner built the car with a no expense spared attitude and is a rare opportunity to own one of the best modified Monaros in the country.
