1976 Holden HJ Sandman Panel Van

HIGHLIGHTS: – Genuine HJ Sandman – Brisbane built, XX7 Plated car – Windowless panel van – High quality body restoration – Rebuilt 308ci V8 engine – M21 4 speed manual transmission – Desirable colour combination

This is a well restored example of an original, 1976 Holden HJ Sandman XX7 windowless panel van. The Holden Sandman panel van is somewhat of a cult car from the ‘70’s. They have a huge following and a great collectability in today’s market. One of the best things about this particular example is the fact it is a Brisbane built car coded ‘XX7’ on the tags. The Brisbane-built cars were the only vehicles that were nominated using the code ‘XX7’ on their build plates to confirm they are genuine factory Sandmans. All of the cars built at every other plant were not plated like this which means you have to follow a series of clues to try and prove their authenticity.

This van was purchased by the current owner approximately 20 years ago. At the time the van was a running and driving project but wasn’t roadworthy or registered. He chipped away at a few tasks over the years until 2016 when the car was finally registered and driven. He drove the car regularly for almost 12 months before the decision was made to pull the car off the road and do a full restoration. The plan was to put the van back to original, so it was sent to Second Chance Restorations where the car was stripped back and any necessary repairs completed with new metal. The goal was to get it as close to factory as possible so the car was fully repainted in its original colour of Mandarin Red. The Black rainbow sandman decals were applied and the factory look is completed with a set of GTS wheels.

Inside the van, Evan’s Trim Shop was tasked with returning the interior to factory fresh.  The van has the correct bucket seats, console, dash, carpets and full length headliner. The fit out in the back was stripped out and put back to bare bones, the way it would have left the factory in 1976.

Under the bonnet is a 308ci Holden V8 engine that has recently received a freshen up with the heads redone to include hardened valve seats for modern unleaded fuel. The engine is fitted with a very mild cam for street use and is paired to the original style M21, 4 speed manual transmission. The restoration was only just completed before the car was sent to our showroom.

The current owner has moved away and is now pursuing two-wheeled motoring interests so has decided it is time for someone else to enjoy the van while it is all fresh and new.
