This 1973 Ford F100 has been custom built to make the most reliable, daily driven, old school cruiser. The truck is certified as an ICV and is essentially the marriage of an F-Truck body over the underpinnings of a 2000 model Ford XR8 Falcon one tonner ute. The truck has all of the features, performance and reliability of the modern falcon but the classic looks of the F100.

Starting with the body, the F100 was purchased as a rolling shell in good condition, the floor was cut out of the cab with the XR8 floor pan used and extensive work performed to ensure the two mated together seamlessly. There are a few nice subtle custom touches like the door latches and strikers from the Falcon grafted into the F100 doors so they open and close like a modern car. The truck was completely repainted by Exclusive Customs on the Gold Coast in Cream with a two tone ‘Root Beer Metallic’ coloured roof. Likewise, the door handles, visor, grille, bumpers and steel wheels all received the Root Beer treatment.

Inside the car has received a full custom interior combining the old school look with modern amenities. As many of the features from the XR8 were used as possible, without it looking visually like a modern trim inside. The first thing you will notice is the truck is right hand drive. The seats, gauge cluster, pedals, steering column are all XR8 items. The controls from the XR8 were also used for the headlight switch, power windows and air conditioning. The dash, door trims and centre console are custom items which were all covered in cream as well as a full headliner and new carpets. There is a Bluetooth stereo mounted in the dash and hidden cup holder and storage in the centre console which houses the old school style Lokar shifter for the automatic trans. Under the tonneau cover in the back is a very neat and usable, raised timber bed floor.

Underneath the bonnet is all XR8 Falcon with the factory 5.0L fuel injected V8 front and centre. The joins between the two cars look seamless in the engine bay. You will not the factory brakes of the XR8 are retained including the ABS module as is the cooling systems and reservoir bottles. The automatic transmission is factory XR8 with a Lokar shifter adapted for the old school look. Moving underneath the car is all factory XR8 one tonner suspension front and back as is the differential.

The beauty of this setup is that any servicing or maintenance parts for the truck are cheap to buy and readily available, generally off the shelf here in most stores around Australia. The driving experience of the truck is also very different to any other old car you will drive. Even cars with modern engine swaps generally don’t have all of the modern underpinnings and mechanicals to give a true factory style driving experience like this. There is a huge amount time and money invested into making these two cars work together and look seamless. The car has been approved and previously registered as an ICV in QLD on its completion in 2020.
