This 1979 Holden HZ Sandman tribute ute has been through an extensive rebuild into a tough and very tidy street car. The ute was originally built by a gent in Dubbo, NSW who owned it for 18 years. When the car first hit the road it was packing a massive 960hp 383ci Chevy V8 with an 8-71 Blower sticking up as high as the roof. During that time the car won a bunch of awards at various shows and made the top 60 at Summernats. The car has since been converted back to a much friendlier street specification, now running a warm 350ci Chevy V8 with a mild cam, intake and Holley carburettor. Long tube headers run into a custom dual stainless exhaust that dumps just before the diff. The engine is paired to a turbo 400 automatic transmission and power is fed to the rear wheels via a 9” diff. The rear suspension has been converted to a triangulated four link with coil overs and the brakes have been upgraded to be Wilwood discs on all four corners. The engine bay is well presented with polished fabricated rocker covers, braided lines and polished catch can. The cooling system has ben upgraded with an alloy radiator and twin thermos fans. A custom aluminium fuel cell sits under the rear of the car with electric fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator.
The paint and body on the car have been though an extensive make over. The work is of a high quality in general and the car is refinished in PPG light blue with contrasting orange and yellow Sandman decals. The front guards feature GTS flutes and the bonnet (which no longer needed a massive hole in it) was recently replaced with a new carbon fibre item with reverse cowl. The inside of the tub is all nicely painted to match with tubs in the floor and custom inserts in the bed sides. The battery has also been relocated to the tub. Every piece of chrome on the car has been replaced or refurbished and the ute sits over a set of staggered 20/22” Intro billet wheels that are polished up to a chrome finish.
Like the outside, the interior has been completed redone in Tan. Everything inside has been touched from the carpets to the headliner. The bench seat remains in place so you can seat three people. The factory style dash has a fabricated metal insert that houses a full suite of Autometer Ultra-lite gauges including shift light up on the A pillar. The steering wheel is a Billet Specialties item and there is a B&M shifter on the floor.
A massive amount of time and money have been invested into making this Sandman tribute one of the coolest Holden utes in the country.
