This 1971 Valiant Charger has been through a full ground up build and tastefully modified with a 70s American Mopar flavour. We think that if an Aussie Valiant Charger had a love child with an American A12 Drag pack Road Runner, this is what it would look like.

The owner has built the car over the last 9 years, but started with a project car that had a large amount of the bodywork already completed. Any rust was removed with new floors welded in place. The original doors were ditched with ones from a VJ model used in their place. The shell was then trusted to Killer Finish in Brendale, QLD to lay down the Mercedes Benz gloss black with satin bonnet, side grilles and tail panel. The A12 style hood scoop was grafted onto the bonnet and the factory style grill was chromed and de-coloured. This is where the cool US Mopar look stems from. The exterior look is finished with a set of 15” black steel wheels with Aussie Chrysler dog dish hubcaps and red wall tyres.

Inside, the car received a retrim thanks to Bribie trimming. The carpets are all new and the seats and door trims have been refinished in white which contrasts perfectly against the black exterior. The interior has been kept period with a Hurst quarter stick automatic shifter between the front bucket seats. There is an Autometer Ultra-lite II Tacho and shift light mounted to the steering column with another four matching gauges neatly mounted under the dash.

Under the bonnet now lives a US Spec 440ci big block V8 engine that has been fully rebuilt. The engine features Aeroflow Alloy heads, roller rockers, Howard’s 600 cam and Holley 750 cfm brawler carb. The car make a healthy 360hp at the rear wheels with this setup. The engine is paired to a TCI 727 Automatic transmission with forward pattern and 3500 rpm stall converter from The Converter Shop. Power is fed to the rear wheels through a Ford 9” diff with 3.5 ratio Truetrac centre. An ICE 7 amp, 2 step ignition system provides spark and fuel is provided by a Carter electric fuel pump fed by a modified fuel tank. A custom alloy radiator with twin thermos fans keep everything cool. Exhaust gasses escape through an custom exhaust by Fat Pipes in Narangba. The front end has been upgraded with a Elko big block front end conversion kit with rack steering. The front suspension features Pedders shocks with VJ Valiant brakes and the rear has lowered springs with Pedders shocks.

The owner built the car to be a great street car rather than to race or be thrashed. The whole concept of an American themed Aussie Mopar is certainly a cool one and something we have not seen executed as well as this in the past. An awesome Aussie muscle car with some American flavour.
