This 1984 Holden VK Commodore has been through a full rebuild into a HDT Group A/3 ‘Blue Meanie’ tribute. A VK HDT ‘Blue Meanie’ is one of the most collectible 80’s Aussie muscle cars and has become the icon of a generation. These days, genuine examples can fetch multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars and there is a huge market for well built replicas like this one.
On the outside, the car has been fully repainted in Blue and fitted with the HDT Group 3 bodykit. This is much more extensive than a normal group A replica kit and includes a front bumper, grille, bonnet bulge, side skirts, rear bumper and rear spoiler. The headlights are also fitted with HDT style covers and have the rubber seal around them that is often missing. To finish the look on the outside, the car is fitted with a set of oversized, 20” Replica HDT Aero wheels.
Inside the trim looks just like you would expect to see in a real deal car. The car is trimmed in Cerulean Herringbone insert trim with Scheel style bucket seats. There are three aftermarket gauges neatly mounted in the centre console to keep an eye on vital signs. It appears as though there is an original radio in the dash but this is a clever removable face plate that reveals a Bluetooth capable aftermarket head unit behind.
Under the bonnet is a 308ci V8 engine that has been upgraded with a Holley carb and electronic ignition. The engine bay is well presented with HDT style cold air tray intake and billet strut tower caps. Exhaust is handled by a set of pacemaker headers into a custom twin system. The engine is paired to a 5 speed manual transmission sourced from a Toyota Supra. Power is fed to the rear wheels through a diff sourced from a VL turbo. The car has the standard disc brakes all round that have been upgraded with slotted and driller rotors front and rear. There is power steering and the car sits down low thanks to a set of lowered king springs.
This is a cool example to purchase a high quality ‘Blue Meanie’ replica for a fraction of the cost of an original car. The odometer is currently showing 107,700kms and the car has only travelled approximately 2,000 kms since the rebuild.
