This 1981 Ford Fairmont Ghia ESP was sold new by Coachcraft Ford in Wooloongabba, QLD in December of 1981. The car was pretty much fully loaded from the factory with all of the fruit. There is a letter from Ford which confirms the car is one of one in its specification and was ordered with the following options: T code – 5.8L V8 four barrel, L code – four speed manual floor shift, L code – Hermitage paintwork, B code – Black interior, 03 code – Mandatory Seat Belts, 38 code – Power door locks, 46 code – Power operated windows, 54 code – European Sports Pack and code 49 – ER608H 15” tyres.

The car has been owned by a number of collectors over the years and has been with the current over for approximately five years. The body of the car is in very good shape and received a closed door repaint in its original colour some time in the early 2000s. The car has the correct ESP Sev Marchall spot lights which were N.O.S and the headlight protectors were also replaced with N.O.S items.  The wheels on the car are all date stamped correct and were refurbished 3 years ago and even include the original metal valve stems. Even the spare is a matching mag wheel.

Inside the car is in very good shape with the black trim being restored using a Global trim kit in the correct factory pattern. The carpets are original and have never been replaced so do show some signs of wear under the floor mat on the drivers side. The original stereo still remains in place with four speakers and power antenna. Factory power windows and power steering was a nice luxury touch back in 1981. There is a power sunroof fitted to the car that is in very early know pictures and is believed to be a dealer fitted item.

Under the bonnet is the original, matching number 351ci V8 engine. It is believed that the engine was rebuilt in the early 2000s. The engine bay is extremely well presented in a factory presentation. The engine is paired to the factory four speed, single rail manual transmission. The input shaft and extension house seal were recently replaced. Power is fed to the rear wheels through the standard Borg Warner Diff with 2.92 LSD centre. The suspension is standard and retains the original Bilstein shocks and 22mm ESP sway bar. The brakes are the standard four wheel disc set up with the master cylinder and calipers fully rebuilt approximately four years ago.

These XD and XE Fairmont Ghia ESP’s have certainly been big market movers in value and collectability over the last few years. This car being a one of one specification and being a factory 5.8L four speed car makes it about as good as they get. The car comes with the original keys and a letter or authenticity from Ford so you know you are getting the real deal.
