This 1978 Holden HZ ute has been through a bare metal restoration into a neat Sandman tribute. The car was purchased by the current owner three years ago as a good rust free driver. The car underwent a professional partial restoration by Retromax engineering. As part of this it received a fresh bare metal paint job with all worn parts replaced with brand new or serviced components installed. The ute has been built to be driven as a super comfortable reliable weekend cruiser that presents extremely well on the road.
The body of the ute was sand blasted back to bare metal before being resprayed in Absinth Yellow 2k gloss by Retromax. The ute was then fitted with HJ style Sandman stripes and decals. All of the chrome work externally was restored or replaced. Over the back, a lockable hard lid was fitted and painted in Mercedes metallic 2k black. To complete the look externally, the car sits over a set of retro period stagged 17” GTS style wheels.
Open the door and you will find a completely retrimmed interior with new door cards and aftermarket bucket seats. There is a GTS style dash, steering wheel and centre console used. To keep things comfortable there is an air conditioning system fitted with outlet under the dash on the passenger side by Cool Drive. For tunes while cruising there is a Kenwood stereo system mounted in the dash. Inside the tub has been neatly painted with a black textured spray in liner.
Lift the bonnet and you will find a neatly detailed engine bay housing a 202ci six cylinder engine. The engine is factory in its specs and is paired to a Trimatic automatic transmission which was rebuilt by Gearbox Services NSW. Power is fed to the rear wheels through the factory 6 cyl differential. Exhaust gasses escape through X-flo headers into a full custom fabricated 2 ¾” stainless steel tig welded exhaust system. The suspension has received all new shocks and bushes before getting new King springs up front and lowered leafs in the rear. The power steering box has been fully rebuilt with all new links, new column and new pump. Handling is improved with new sway bar, links and bushes. Cooling is handled by a new alloy radiator and a new trans oil cooler with motorsport hoses. The brakes are the original discs up front and drums in the rear that have been rebuilt.
This HZ Sandman tribute ute would make for a cool Aussie classic cruiser. The car has been built with the intention that it would be reliable enough to use regularly and to turn heads when it is out on the street.
