1977 Chrysler Valiant Charger CL Police Car

HIGHLIGHTS: – Ex NSW Highway patrol car – Factory 318ci V8 engine – Torqueflite 904 Automatic transmission – Dressed using period correct police items – Working light and siren bar – Original handbooks

This 1977 Valiant CL Charger left the factory on Monday the 4th of April 1977 and was used by the NSW Police department as a highway patrol car from new. Being a police vehicle is was optioned with the K16 coded Police special pack and is rumoured to be one of only 43 built. Naturally being a NSW police car, the car was Alpine white with Saddle interior. The Charger left the factory with the following option codes E44 – 318ci V8, C16 – Auto console shift, F47 – Delete courtesy door switches, G18 – Laminated windscreen clear, G25 – Vent windows, K16 – Police Charger (5.2L engine), T15 – E70 HR B.S.W tyres, Y-26 – Mesh sunvisor  (Govt. only), Y27 – Door weathershield (Govt. only), Y32 & Y34 – Mudflaps front and rear (Govt. only).

Today the car has survived extremely well and would be one of the best examples of a Police Charger original presentation. The original 318ci V8 engine remains in the car but has been upgraded to include a four barrel manifold and Holley carburettor. There is also a set of extractors and the heads were reconditioned to suit unleaded fuel in 2013. The 904 Torqueflite transmission was fully rebuilt in the mid 90s and the LSD rear end was refurbished in 2016.

The paint on the car is believed to be mostly original. It does present very well for a car of its age but you can see some areas with minor craze cracking from old age. The Highway Patrol and NSW Police images on the body are removable magnets rather than decals so you can remove them while driving around the place. Likewise, the light and siren bar on the roof can be removed or does come with a cover to put over it. The interior also appears to be mostly original and in good condition. There is a split on the bolster of the drivers seat and there has been a more modern stereo installed into the dash. There is air conditioning fitted with a unit neatly under the dash as well as an aftermarket alarm system. Mounted on the dash is an additional ‘Police Special’ speedometer.

This Charger is a great example of a rare survivor and certainly a big talking point for anyone who sees it. There is also potential to make some extra cash with the car by leasing it for film, tv and advertising where a period police vehicle is needed. The car come with a folder or receipts as well as the original operation manual showing selling dealer and NSW Police original ownership.

Please note: It is illegal to impersonate a police officer in every state of Australia. This car is a genuine ex-police vehicle and the police sirens and decals are intended for show or film/tv purposes only and not for street use. The NSW police and Highway patrol decals are magnetic and should be removed while driving and the police light bar and sirens have a cover for street use.
