1976 HOLDEN LX TORANA HATCH

This 1976 Holden Torana hatchback has been through an extensive build with some tasteful modifications and upgrades. A Melbourne built car originally, it started life as a SL model, 202 powered Trimatic. The Hatch was completely rebuilt approximately three years ago and transformed into a tough street car that absolutely means business.

Firstly, the body has been upgraded to include A9X-style flares and front bumper along with a larger cowl bonnet and bobtail rear wing. The body is neat and straight and has been repainted in bright ‘Papaya’ orange with A9X-style blackouts in gloss black over the bonnet, tops of the doors and window frames. The bumper bars are colour coded and there is SS badging applied. Under the back you can see a polished drop tank. The car sits lowered over a set of Weld wheels for that toughie look with big tyres under the back and front runners at the fore.

Inside, the trim has been fully refinished in black – back to a factory SS style. There is a black billet style steering wheel and a black ratchet shifter for the automatic transmission, parked between the bucket seats. An Autometer tacho and water temp gauge are neatly mounted to the steering column. There is a black venetian blind mounted in the rear window.

Lift the bonnet and this is where the party gets started. The engine bay is immaculately presented with the orange paintwork extending throughout. Front and centre is the showpiece, a built 400 ci small block Chevy V8 engine with Hilborn injection proudly sitting up top.  Inside it features a hydraulic cam and roller rockers amongst a host of other go-fast goodies. The engine was built by Langford Race Engines and is snappy and free revving, making 512 hp at the flywheel and 390 hp at the rear treads. The engine is paired to a Turbo 400 automatic transmission with 5,500 rpm stall converter. Feeding power to the rear wheels is a brand new 9-inch diff with TrueTrac centre. Pulling everything up is a power booster and Wilwood master cylinder feeding a set of Commodore disc brakes with HQ Holden stud pattern. To ensure the car handles well there is a CRS front cross member with tubular suspension arms and adjustable coil over suspension. The steering has been upgraded to a rack and pinion system for better control. The battery has been relocated to the boot and there is a QLD Mod plate fitted to the car.

This is an awesome and tough example of a LX Torana hatchback. These hatches are always extremely popular and good examples are becoming increasingly difficult to find.
