This 1974 De Tomaso Pantera has been through a ground up build into one of Australia’s best custom Panteras. The car began life as an Aussie delivered, factory RHD car and was purchased by the current owner as a project car back in March 2019. The build began almost immediately with Pro Street Bodyworks in Seven Hills, NSW undertaking the mammoth task to turn the car into Australia’s wildest Pantera.
The body of the car was completed blasted with the car being converted from a skinny body into a wide body GT5s tribute with all new widened guards and rear wing. There are a number of subtle body modification performed which include rear A/C vent delete, shaved engine bay, shaved front trunk area, custom headlights, bonnet grilles moved forward, custom front grille and the trunk opening cut larger to allow for the eight-stack injection system. With the body mods completed, the car was fully repainted in a custom mix Soul Red metallic. The chrome bumpers, stainless trim and badges were all painted black for a more modern and sinister look. A set of custom rear view mirrors sit on the side of the car Completing the look on the outside is a set of 17” DeTomaso factory style wheels which have been rechromed and centres repainted.
The entire interior of the car has been treated to a full custom trim by X-trim Motor Trimming in Narellan, NSW. The seats have been swapped out for more modern and supportive Recaro buckets which have been custom trimmed to match the rest of the interior in black leather and suede with red hexagon detail stitching. The centre console houses modern push button switches for the lights and power windows. The dash is trimmed with a full set of Autometer Phantom gauges. The steering wheel is wrapped in Alcantara and the pedals are Wilwood items with Sparco pads. Retractable seat belts are fitted and finished in bright red. Things are kept comfortable in the cabin thanks to a vintage air con system. The polished gated manual shifter reminds you that you’re in a 70s Italian sports car. The inside of the frunk is just as well detailed with shaved and painted sides, brake and clutch master cylinders and a custom floor mat featuring the DeTomaso logo.
Under the rear lives a the original 351ci Cleveland V8 engine which has been fully rebuilt by Marjun Automotive in 2020. The engine has been upgraded with alloy heads, bigger cam and stack injection run by a Holley EFI ECU. The engine setup is said to be good for 500hp at the flywheel. The engine is paired to the factory style transaxle which has been fully serviced. The whole engine bay has been shaved and smoothed and painted in body colour as has the transaxle. The engine is neatly detailed in black and a custom stainless centre exit exhaust looks like a piece of artwork. The suspension has been upgraded with Strange coil overs all around with the suspension arms being painted body colour as a nice detail. The steering system has been rebuilt and the brakes have been upgraded to Wilwood discs all round with six-piston calipers up front and a new hand brake.
The car is an all new build and hasn’t really done any miles since it was completed earlier this year. The car was entered in the Killer Rides Australia show in Woolongong in August where it won people’s choice award and best displayed car. This would have to be one of the best looking DeTomaso Pantera’s in the country, be sure to register and bid if you want to see it parked in your garage.
