CUSTOM 1974 FORD XB SEDAN

This 1974 Ford XB Falcon sedan has been completely rebuilt and tastefully modified with every single item refurbished or replaced. The car was purchased by the current owner (who is a motor trimmer by trade) as a rolling shell in approximately 2015. Whilst the car was in reasonably good shape it did require some minor repairs and was missing some trim and odds and ends. The car was purchased with the intention of building it into a show quality vehicle he could use to promote his business.

The day the car arrived home the build process commenced with the car being stripped back and send off to be sand blasted. The blasting revealed a good body with some repairs required to the lowers and sills – which were all replaced. The car came with two bonnets which were deskinned with the best parts of each used to put back together into one along with treating the inside of the frame to ensure it didn’t rust from the inside out, like they did from factory.

The car was then sent off to USA1 in Mount Nathan, QLD to get treated to some subtle custom body work. The front guards were cut and widened approximately 25mm while the rear guards were widened about 40mm each side, which included flowing into the rear doors. The result is a factory looking finish with guard lines closer to a hard top than a sedan. Next up, the front brow trim was moulded into front guards. A custom all aluminium grille was hand made for the car which gives it a more modern and sleeker look. The headlight surrounds are 1970 Dodge Challenger items that have been modified to fit. Both front and rear bumper bars have been shaved with the bumper bolts deleted. The rear bumper was shortened and tucked tight against the body. Under the front of the car is a one-off custom front spoiler that is the only fibreglass part on the car. The detail flowed into the engine bay too, which was smoothed with any unused holes welded up. The battery tray was deleted, and a custom reveal panel fabricated. Finally, the car was completely covered inside and out in metallic blue by Big Rigs Paint and Panel in Alberton, in approximately 2018. Along with the paint and body, the car received new rubber and all new glass throughout. All stainless trim was repaired and repolished.

Being a motor trimmer by trade, and building the car to promote his business, you know the owner was going to throw everything at the interior. Firstly, sound deadener and insulation was applied to the floor pans, roof skin, inner door trims and firewall. Everything was replaced inside from carpet to headliner. A black and tan custom leather theme is used throughout. The front seats are modified BF Falcon items that have had the headrests removed and converted to high backs before being wrapped in tan leather. The rear seat has been moulded into two buckets with a custom centre console that runs the entire length of the interior. The speaker grille in between the rear seats uses a Chevy Impala frame, adapted to fit. The dash is also leather wrapped and features a Speed Hut gauge set placed in the factory locations. There are push button switches on the dash to operate the headlight halos and under bonnet lighting. Creature comforts include air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, central locking and LED lighting. To finish off the interior there is a new stereo system featuring an Alpine Bluetooth capable head unit with DB speakers all round. The boot is also fully decked out to match the trim and hides 2 x 10-inch DB subs with a monoblock and 4-channel amplifier to run it all. The whole car was rewired by Ando’s Auto Electrics.

Under the bonnet sits a nicely detailed 351ci Cleveland V8 engine. The owner purchased the engine and pulled it down to check it out before deciding to freshen it up with a few goodies. The block was bored 30 thou over before replacing the standard crank and rods bolted to Hypereutectic 9:1 Pistons. A Crane Hydraulic Cam was used along with a Roll Master chain set and Clevite bearings. A high-volume oil pump keeps everything lubricated. Bolted to the block are 4V cylinder heads with Crane valve springs and hardened push rods. A set of roller rockers were also added. Up top is an Edelbrock performer manifold with a Holley carburettor. The front of the engine features a billet style serpentine belt pulled kit. Giving the car a sweet rumble is a full custom twin 3” exhaust system.

The engine is paired to a C4 automatic transmission supplied by Eagle Auto Parts. The transmission has a stage 2 shift kit and 3500rpm stall converter. Feeding power to the rear wheels is a Ford 9” differential with 3.55 gears. Pulling everything up is a set of four-wheel power disc brakes with Wilwoods up front and EL Falcon items in the rear with DBA slotted rotors. The suspension components have all been replaced or refurbished with King Springs and Koni adjustable shocks setting the height both front and rear. The cars sits on a set of 20” Boyd Coddington Espada wheels measuring 20×8.5” up front and 20×10.5” in the rear. The wheels are wrapped with 245 and 295 Nitto Invo tyres.

The total build on the car took approximately 4 years to complete and has been finished for approximately 2 years now. The car has been used to promote the owners’ motor trimming business at various shows and events here in South East Queensland, during which the car has won a cabinet full of awards and trophies.
