1973 HOLDEN LJ TORANA COUPE

This 1973 Holden LJ Torana S Coupe is a unique Aussie classic cruiser with lots of interesting options. The car was sold new by Suttons Motors in Arncliffe, NSW on the 1st of June, 1973. The car was not just standard dealership stock, rather a special order car with a host of interesting options. The current owner tells us that he believes the car to be a dealer pack called a “Tillie” which was similar to the “Continental” pack sold by some dealers. This package was apparently aimed at buyers who wanted an economical but well performing Torana that was set up for touring. The car features a 2850 cc, 6-cylinder engine paired to a pistol grip, floor shifted, Trimatic automatic transmission. In the boot there is a larger Bathurst XU1 style fuel tank and a highway diff with 3.08 gears. The dash is a GTR style with tacho in the cluster. Apparently, the LJs also came with GTR suspension, wheels, bumper bar overriders and a unique side trim moulding. Although we haven’t found anything official to verify the existence of the “Tillie” model, the car is certainly a dealer special order car and an interesting specification.

The other interesting part of this car is the factory colour, which Holden called ‘March the 17th’. The colour was created by Holden to Celebrate St. Patricks Day, which falls on March the 17th, and is an appropriate deep green colour. This colour was used on a selection of cars, across several different models but only between August 1972 and March 1973. The car has been repainted in its original colour approximately three years ago and presents extremely well. Inside the interior is all black vinyl to factory specification and in extremely good condition.

Under the bonnet is the original, matching numbers 173 ci 6-cylinder engine. The engine was rebuilt some time ago and runs well. The engine bay is presented back to a tidy factory look. The engine is paired with the original Trimatic automatic transmission that has recently been serviced. Likewise, the brakes were recently gone over and either refurbished or replaced accordingly.

These two door LJ Toranas don’t come up very often and this is certainly a uniquely optioned and interesting example. A sound investment and quality Aussie classic that won’t break the budget.
