1972 Holden HQ 308 GTS Coupe
This is a very unique and low production 1972 HQ Holden GTS Monaro in March 17th green. The colour was used on a small number of HQ GTS, Monaro, Torana GTR, 6 cyl S & SL models and only cars painted on that one day, never to be repeated by Holden. The car you see here is said to be one of only 8 Monaros painted in this colour from the factory. The car was completed at the GM-H Pagewood plant in Sydney on the 7th of November 1972 and sold new at Zupp’s Holden in Mt Gravatt in QLD. The car is supplied with letter of authenticity and production report from Holden to confirm it is an original March the 17th HQ GTS Monaro with a 308ci V8 and 4 speed manual transmission.
This example has been restored inside and out. Found and purchased as great surviving and complete car it was always to be built as a tuffy until the new owner realised it’s rarity and decided it was one to be refreshed and restored rather than modified. It was very good in the body and when it was stripped to bare metal they found absolutely zero rust and gave the owner a fantastic base on which to build. The March 17 special green hue was then liberally applied over the car for its unique and signature look. A host of new and refinished parts were fitted to the body including new front and rear bumpers, tail lights, grill, wheel arch moulds and badges. A complete rubber kit was sourced and applied to ensure everything sealed as it should. The front and rear screens were both fitted with new glass.
Inside the car received a host of new items including a full interior trim back to factory look for the seats, door trims and kick panels. A new hood lining was fitted to the car and new carpets and underlay were laid on the floor. The dash received a new dash pad and facia along with a new steering wheel. All in all the interior looks super fresh and is a nice place to be.
Opening the bonnet reveals a nice factory look engine bay that’s home to the original matching numbers 308ci Holden V8. The engine itself has been completely rebuilt including new pistons, rods, lifters, and oil pump. The block was honed only but retains its original boar size. The original cylinder heads received a freshen up with new valves and springs. The starter was replaced to ensure you get the right result every time you hit the key. The factory manual M21 gearbox was also given a freshen up with new seals and synchros. The entire exhaust was replace with an item similar to factory specs. The brake booster and slave cylinder were replaced to ensure the brakes were behaving as they should. Under the bonnet also received new hinges and lock down at the nose cone.
Under the car is super tidy in general and didn’t escape an overhaul during the restoration. A complete new front end was fitted along with new front rotors and pads. Moving backwards from there the car received a new uni and tail shaft and new rear brakes. The diff received new seals and bearings while it was out of the car. All said and done, the car is a very nicely restored example of a low production and unique HQ GTS Monaro with all the right gear and authenticity documents to back it up.
