1971 Lincoln Continental Coupe
This 1971 Lincoln Continental Mark III Coupe is from an era in time where bigger was better! And this coupe is massive, with a hood long enough to land small aircraft on, was built at the Lincoln plant in Wixom, Michigan in 1971. The car is in what could be described as survivor condition not being fully restored but certainly a good original car. The car was always a Californian car being sold new in Hollywood and living in the fantastic Cali climate for most of its life. The paintwork on the car is older but in good order all round, as is the chrome work and stainless trim. Generally, these cars were well cared for given they were expensive cars to purchase in their day, they were rarely mistreated by their proud owners.
As is the case for most Lincolns, this Continental is equipped to the nines. This 2 door hardtop MK III coupe has the matching vinyl roof, with off white leather seats, power windows, working power seats, power brakes, power steering and power locks. It also has cool headliner mounted warning lights and retractable flip door headlights. The dash is in very good condition with lovely wood grain trim in fantastic condition and a host of gauges to monitor the 460 4 bbl vital signs along with a cartier branded clock. Technology was quite advanced for its era with auto-temp control / AC, three point seat belts and Lincoln’s own Sure Track braking system which is essentially a primitive form of ABS.
The massive 460ci V8 engine runs strong, shifts well and puts the 365 hp/485 lb ft to the ground through a C6 3 speed auto transmission and a 2.8-1 open differential. While the big motor pulls the car well, it’s more like a yacht than a muscle car. Lincolns are all about luxury and the ride down the road in these cars are super smooth and second to none. The car comes with a host of documentation including hand books, original sales brochures, warranty card, tyre warranty booklet, previous registration slips and even the original sales contract and purchase check from when the car was sold new in Hollywood, California in 1971! This sort of documentation is rarely seen and an important part of the car’s history that no amount of money can replace once it’s lost!
The car is 50 years old and not fully restored, we believe the 34,000 miles could well be genuine and while it has been well looked after, it has some minor chips in the paint, the rear power windows aren’t working and the AC doesn’t seem to be blowing cold despite everything appearing to be in place. Despite those few minor issues, this car still looks great and will certainly pull plenty of admirers cruising down the motorway or pulling up at your local car show. If you are looking for a well looked after, well documented, big American land yacht, then this may be the perfect way to cruise off into the sunset.
