This 1971 Holden HQ Monaro Coupe has been fully rebuilt into a tough street machine. The current owner purchased the car approximately five years ago out of Melbourne. At the time the car was a nicely restored example but wasn’t the most exciting from a performance perspective. The current owner set about righting that wrong by upgrading the engine, trans, diff and suspension over the course of his ownership.

The body of the car was fully restored by the previous owner and repainted in it’s original colour of Lone O’ranger. Starting life as a base model, the car was upgraded with GTS fluted guards, a GTS grille and badging. The chrome and stainless on the outside of the car was all either refinished or replaced. The bonnet was later modified to allow the blown V8 to poke its head through. The external look of the car is completed with a set of 17” GTS style wheels.

Inside, the car was treated to all new trim at the same time as the body was done. The interior has been finished in original Sandalwood colour but with the addition of Houndstooth inserts. There are all new black carpets on the floor and new headliner up top. The steering wheel, fish scale dash facia and centre console are all GTS items. There is a push button start on the centre console for a modern touch. Tunes while cruising are provided by a Pioneer aftermarket stereo system. There is a trio of gauges under the dash to keep an eye on vital signs. The boot has been neatly panelled out with battery relocated from the engine bay and battery isolation switch.

In the engine bay now lives a fully built and blown 383ci stroker V8 engine. The was built by Engine Masters Australia in 2019 and started with a new EMA350 block which was bored and stroked to 383ci. The engine features Scat forged crank, Scat H-beam rods, SRP Forged pistons, Clevite bearings, Howards Hydraulic roller cam, Howards hydraulic roller lifters and Melings oil pump. The engine is topped with a Weiand 6/71 polished blower with Blower Shop manifold and Joe Blo injection hat. Engine management is handled by a Haltech Elite 550 ECU. The engine made 486hp and 531 lb-ft of torque on the Engine Master dyno. The engine bay is well presented with colour coded inner guards and firewall as well as billet hinges.

The engine is paired to a Turbo 400 automatic transmission that has been rebuilt with a stage two shift kit and 2,800 rpm Slingshot stall converter. Power is fed to the rear wheel through a nine inch limited slip diff with 3.37 ratio. The front suspension has been completely upgraded with a tubular upper and lower A-arms and adjustable coil overs from the Rod Shop. The brakes have been upgraded with power assisted Wilwood discs up front and VT Commodore discs on the rear. Under the back there is a large polished aluminium drop tank. Exhaust gasses escape through long tube four into one headers into a custom stainless steel dual exhaust. A large aluminium radiator with twin thermo fans keeps temperatures in check.

The result of all this work is a tough custom HQ Monaro coupe that’s a bunch more fun than when it left the factory. These HQ Coupes are always popular and this one is presented in an awesome factory colour combo and packed full of upgrades.
