This 1971 DeTomaso Pantera has been through a full nut and bolt, rotisserie rebuild with some mild upgrades. The car was purchased by the current owner and imported from California, USA in 2012. He obtained a Marti Report to verify original build specs, Vin, dates, etc. Starting in late 2012, the car was stripped to a bare shell and received a full- rotisserie ground-up restoration in Brisbane, QLD by the owner and Classic Service and Repair. Pty Ltd. While retaining original body lines and styling several sub-systems underwent upgrades, improvement or enhancement. This vehicle has undergone total restoration with nothing left to chance. A ‘real’ ground-up, nut and bolt resto.

The original body lines and styling have been retained with the owner performing the initial steel work to lower radiator support sections, floor pans and door sills. The remaining bodywork and full repaint was performed by Sixties Rust, Twotones and Rocksolid Autobody. The only significant change body wise was the original factory rear LH and RH exhaust ‘pockets’ were deleted to allow for custom overhead stainless exhaust. The body was completely refinished in Oxford White 2 pack COB sourced from a 2016 Mustang with 2 pack Satin Black accents. Some other external features include hand formed front and rear grills, rebuilt exterior door handles and locks, all original stainless moldings/trims repaired and polished by Kev Harnell and the original front and rear bumpers repaired and chromed by Pacific Plating. During the assembly all new body rubber and weather seals were used with all original glass/screens retained and polished. The look of the car is completed with a set of limited edition, custom order (US Pantera Owners Group) Boyd Coddington, billet wheels measuring 17×9” up front and 17×11” in the rear. The wheels are wrapped in are Kumho Ecsta 245/40-17 front and Kumho Ecsta 315/35-17 rear

Open the door and you will be greeted with a full custom black leather interior featuring diagonal pattern stitching carried through-out from suede headlining, rear bulkhead, to seats and door trims. The original seat frames were retained with hand-formed additional bolstering and support. ADR compliant seat belts featuring laser etched DeTomaso logo were fitted for safety and compliance. On the floor is leather edged German velour carpet. The centre console was covered in matching leather and the original dash received a vacuum-formed restoration. In the dash itself, the original Veglia instrumentation was calibrated and restored along with all new switches. Touch points are nice with a leather Momo sports steering wheel as well as a billet shifter and billet door lock knobs. To keep the cabin comfortable, the air conditioning was fully restored including the original AC evap unit fitted with new blower fans and upgraded aircon compressor. The entire floor, roof, firewall and rear bulkhead have been insulated and sound-deadening including the inside of the doors. The upholstery was completed by Dion Tylerm with the dash by Dash originals SA and instrument calibration by Lionel Otto’s Instruments.

Open up the back end and you will find the mid mounted, original 351 Cleveland V8 which has been fully rebuilt and upgraded.  The engine has been bored 0.30” before being fitted with ARP rod bolts, hypereutectic pistons, moly rings, Comp Cams hydraulic roller cam and valvetrain, ported Edelbrock Performer RPM heads, high-flow alum water pump, ARP oil pump drive, Mellings oil pump, billet serpentine alt/AC comp belt drive. The crown jewel up top is the EFI Hardware which includes 8 stack induction and is managed by a Haltech Elite 2000 ECU incorporating 8 individual coil packs and custom ignition trigger. A deep rumbling sound is supplied by a custom mandrel-bent stainless exhaust with Magnaflow muffler. Fuel is supplied by a custom twin tank/twin fill fuel system with balance hose, drop-in Walbro in-tank motorsport fuel pump, motorsport injectors, Turbosmart pressure reg using Aeroflow AN6 return line and in-line filters. Other accessories include adapted K&N air cleaner assemblies, MSD Dynaforce hi torque starter motor, PowerMaster 140 amp alternator, 160 degree TrackBoss thermostat and Milodon oil pan.  Keeping things cool are high-flow Maradyne thermofans (2x push, 2xpull) feeding a Fluidyne high flow aluminum radiator with all new stainless radiator tubes. The engine package was completed in 2019 and is said to be good for approximately 500hp.

The engine is paired to the original numbers-matching ZF 5 speed LSD transaxle which was overhauled by Raceproducts Engineering. Hardy Spicer overhauled and balanced original driveshafts and Mal Wood Automotive provided a heavy duty performance clutch and custom engineered hydraulic throw-out. The engine and trans axle are original items with stampings that match the Marti report.

The suspension is the original front and rear control-arms which have been completely overhauled with U sections ‘boxed’, powder-coated spindles, hubs carriers, control arms, sway bars and upgraded with coil over shocks all round. In the back there is a custom billet rear suspension brace. New urethane bushes were used both front and rear along with new ball joints and wheel bearings all round. The brakes have been upgraded to include TBS billet 6 spot calipers with 300mm drilled and slotted rotors, BHSS/TBS overhauled booster along with brake and clutch master cylinders and finished with new brake hardlines and flex hoses. For reliability, the wiring and electrical system were completely overhauled with new lamps/lenses, LED Dash lights, LED headlamps and upgraded ‘wedge-style’ fuse panel.

This would have to be one of the best DeTomaso Pantera’s available anywhere on the planet. The car has been extensively restored and upgraded in a no expense spared fashion but retains its original lines and classic supercar charm.
