This is a fully restored, rare and high spec 1970 Plymouth ‘Cuda. The car was certainly ordered well by the original owner who went for the performance focused BS23 ‘Cuda rather than a BH23 Barracuda. The car was spec’d out in Rally Red with Black interior. It was also ordered with the big boy, 440ci V8 with high performance six pack carb setup and N96 code Shaker hood!

Not much is known about the early life of the car, other than it would have certainly been a menace to pull up beside at every set of traffic lights. The car was imported into Australia in the early 80s but never registered for use on the road until earlier this year. The current owner purchased the car in 2016, at the time if was complete but dismantled and sitting in undercoat. Over the next four years, he restored the car with the help of Jim Tatton who founded Mopar Sunday here in Australia.

The body of the car was stripped to bare metal and found to be near perfect without any significant rust issues. The boot floor was the only thing that was replaced and the rest of the panels remain original to the car. There were no modifications made with all original metal and spot welds still in place. The car was file finished before being completely recoated in its original colour of Rally Red using PPG paint by a Custom paint shop in Noosa QLD in 2018. The shaker hood remains in place however while from factory it had chrome bumpers, these have upgraded to the optional colour coded Elastomeric bumpers. The ‘Cuda also received a NOS grille and light lenses. The look is completed with the restored original 15” steel wheels with factory hubcaps and white lettered tyres.

Inside the car, the seats, hood lining and carpet were all replaced with new correct items. The crash pad, plastic door cards, kick panels and seat belts all remain original. All of the glass and stainless has been polished. The instrumentation and dash have been refurbished and recalibrated by Otto Industries along with a completely new wiring harness. It should be noted that the tacho and clock have since stopped working. The boot is all neatly painted inside with the original style boot mat, original jack and spare tire with air pump.

Under the bonnet is the original 440ci V8 engine that has been completely rebuilt by well-known Mopar specialist Kevin King. The engine retains its original ‘906’ heads, exhaust manifold, intake manifold and shaker. The crank has been balanced and there is a bigger cam with .030 over pistons and some minor head work. The owner tells us this upgraded setup pushed it closer to 500hp. The car retains all 5 of its original vin stampings in the door tag, dash tag, vin tag, driver cowl and radiator support. The original engine however does include what is believed to be a factory error in the stamping reading ‘0B182322’ rather than ‘0B192322’. The stamping has been analysed by Mopar experts in the US and they believe it to be a genuine factory error. The date code on the block also aligns with the build date on the car. With all of the other digits correct it’s believed this was a factory stamping error.

The engine is paired to a fully rebuilt 727 Torquflite automatic transmission with shift kit and 2500 rpm stall converter. Power is fed to the rear wheels via an 8 ¾ inch Mopar diff with Sure Grip centre and 3.54 gears that was fully rebuilt by Aussie Diffs. The exhaust has been fully restored to factory with correct numbered mufflers, resonators, chrome tips and has NOS intermediate pipes. The suspension is rebuilt with new shocks and set to factory height with standard torsion bars up front with leaf spring in the rear. To improve the drive quality, the steering has been upgraded to power steering. The brakes were originally drums all round but have since been upgraded for safety to include a power booster and discs up front with the drums remaining in the rear.

The whole vehicle has under 200kms on it since the restoration was completed. This is a super rare Rally Red, genuine BS23 Cuda and one of only a handful of 440, 6 pack, shaker cars in the world. A sound investment grade muscle car that is an absolute blast to drive.
