The introduction of the Firebird in 1967 was a huge success for Pontiac. While the car was popular and sold well, what it needed was an ultimate performance variant, and in 1969, that’s exactly what it got. The Trans Am, which was named after the Sports Club of America’s Trans-Am Series, was merely intended to be a low volume speciality Firebird model. The Trans Am was available with the 1969 Firebird’s two top performance engines – the Ram Air III and Ram Air IV 400 CID V8s. The move may have been last minute and not widely advertised at the time, however it helped to build the Trans Am into not only a Pontiac star but a muscle car icon
The 1969 Trans Am was available in two body styles – (hardtop) coupe and convertible. Only 697 Trans Ams were produced for the 1969 model year. 689 of these were coupes, and the other 8 were convertibles. Due to this rarity, the first year Trans Am has become one of the most sought after collectibles from the original muscle car era with genuine coupes pushing into six figure price tags and the convertibles considered to be the holy grail amongst Pontiac enthusiasts.
This car is a very authentic tribute of a 1969 Trans Am created from a 69 Firebird. It has all the correct hallmarks of a genuine Trans Am to the point where even the most knowledgeable Pontiac enthusiast would likely need to check the vin plate to confirm its originality. The external design of a Trans Am is unmistakable from a firebird. All of the 69 Trans Am’s were white with two blue stripes that ran from the front of the hood to the rear spoiler. They also had a large number of added features including fiberglass air extractors on the front guards, a wild rear wing, unique hood with two large functional air scoops, a black plastic lower front spoiler, blacked out front grills and Trans Am decals on the front quarters and top of the rear wing. The Trans Am’s upper rear panel which surrounded the taillights was painted in the same Tyrol Blue colour as the stripes. All of these features are present on this car. Externally the car presents very well, while it was restored some time ago now, it has driven very few miles since.
Inside the Trans Am could be ordered with any colour trim available on the Firebird. While many of these cars were ordered with blue trim, this car features a nice original style black trim throughout. The dash contains optional stacked gauges and tacho.
Under the bonnet is a rebuild 350ci V8 dressed to look like the original Trans Am 400 and upgraded with a new Edelbrock carburettor. The engine is paired to the standard Turbo 400 automatic transmission. The car features some nice options including power steering and power disk brakes with dual master cylinder for safety. The car sits on the correct style 15” Pontiac wheels. The car could be described as a good quality driver car which received a nice restoration some years ago and has only traveled less than 300 miles since. A great talking point and a cool muscle car for the guy who is wanting something a little bit outside of the norm.
