1969 Ford XW Fairmont Custom

This 1969 Ford Falcon XW Fairmont has been through an extensive restoration and heavily upgraded with modifications. The XW started life as a small tag 1969 XW Fairmont in Starlight Blue with a factory fitted 302ci V8, automatic transmission, power steering and dealer fitted A/C.

Over the last few years, the car has undergone a huge transformation where it was stripped bare, extensively restored and heavily modified. The owner tells us that nearly every item on the car has been restored or replaced. The bare shell was soda blasted before receiving new, quarters, boot channels, upper and lower beavers, outer sill panels, front doors, rear door skins, front guards, torque boxes, drip rails and more. The car did receive a couple of modifications to the body which includes 30mm mini tubs and a custom-made aluminium bonnet which the owner tells us cost $4,500 alone. Once the body work was complete the car was prepped for paintwork and colour changed to a deep Emerald Green metallic which was applied to all of the door jambs, engine bay and inside of the boot. Instead of receiving full paintwork, the outside of the car was smoothed and only shot with a base coat in preparation for the custom Satin Grey wrap. The wrap has been professionally applied gives the car a unique look. The exterior of the car received an all new black vinyl roof and refurbished moulds. The glass has been replaced with all new green tinted glass and a new front windscreen. The rubbers were all replaced along with new old stock outer door handles, door locks, boot lock and GS fuel cap. The front and rear bumpers were both replaced and the brackets restored and powder coated. The external lights have been upgraded to LED’s front and rear and there is a trio of Autometer gauges mounted on the plenum cowl. The car sits over a set of American made polished wheels measuring 8” wide in the front and 10” in the rear.

Inside the car is a similar story, firstly the entire floor was dyno matted, 8 boxes worth of it. Next it received new carpets and underlay. The car was treated to a fully restored GS dash with electronic tacho to suit MSD. It also contained new LED clock, radio, chrome bezels, crash pad and glove box lid. A genuine GS steering wheel was also used. The seat frames were powder coated before being recovered in white using the factory pattern as were the door cards. The elephant in the room is the 6 point alloy roll cage (of which only the rear half is currently fitted). SAAS five point harnesses have been fitted with pockets in the set to allow for the crutch strap. Air conditioning is installed to keep everything comfortable and cool. Some cool accessories include a new white venetian rear blind and a genuine ford accessory removable head rest that has been trimmed in white to match.

Lift the custom aluminium hood and you will be greeted by a custom built 347ci Windsor V8 stroker making a respectable and fun 350hp at the rear wheels. The engine bay is nicely detailed with chrome alternator and A/C compressor, billet air filter, billet bonnet hinges, alloy radiator, overflow tanks, RRS alloy strut brace and chromes RRS alloy strut top covers. The engine bay wiring is all neatly hidden from sight. The engine is paired to a Tremec 5 speed manual transmission supplied by Mal Wood with alloy bell housing and new clutch, fly wheel and pressure plate. The is a 3 inch mandrel bent exhaust system with headers to let the gasses flow free.

Moving underneath the car the engine and trans both use custom “tuff” mounts rated for 1000hp, There is a catalogue worth of RRS upgrades which include, front strut conversion, power steering rack conversion, power steering pump and catch tank, Mumford rear end conversion (Watts link coil over trailing arm conversion), tower notching kit, lower control arms and tie rod adjusters. The car also received new front sway bar stiffeners, NOS castor rod, Big camber pins and K Mac front sway bar with new links and Nolathane bushes. Moving backwards from the transmission there is a new thick wall 1350 tail shaft feeding a 9” diff which has been narrowed by 30mm and includes TrueTrac centre, billet axles and 1350 yoke. Pulling everything up in hurry is four-wheel disc brakes with RRS 300mm discs and 6 spot callipers up front and Wilwood discs and 4 spot callipers in the rear. In the boot holds the new fuel system which includes an alloy fuel cell (highly modified), surge tank, lifter and feeder pumps, twin micro filters, pressure regulator, numerous braided lines and fittings and roll over valve. The battery has been relocated to boot with new battery tray and isolation switch along with larger earth and main battery cables fitted.

As you can see, this car has had a phenomenal amount of money and countless hours spent on restoring and upgrading it into a one-off custom Fairmont. The owner had the completed car inspected by an engineer who signed off on all modifications and fitted a QLD mod plate.
