This 1968 Ford Mustang has been through an extensive ground up rebuild and reborn as a 1967 Shelby GT500 replica. The car started life at Ford’s San Jose plant in California before being sold new by Curt Fox Ford in Hollywood, California on the 14th of October 1968. The car lived most of its life in California before being imported into Queensland in 2012. The current over purchased the car in November of 2021 with the intention of doing a full build on the car to give it a new life. The current owner has been building high end Mustangs including GT500 and Eleanor replicas for the last 12 years so it’s safe to say he knows his was around these cars pretty well.

The car was stripped back to a bare shell before being converted into a fastback using all new sheet metal. The Shelby kit used to clone the car into a GT500 is the highest quality on the market today. The bonnet, boot and tail light panel on the car are all made out of steel rather than fiberglass you might see in most replicas. The correct Shelby scoops and lights are all in place and the car is certainly convincing against the real deal. The small details are important, so you might notice the bumpers front and rear have been sectioned and tucked tight to the body with bumper bolts shaved for a smooth finish. Likewise, the Shelby style inboard spot lights have been modified to ensure they match the headlights of the car perfectly. The entire body was then file finished and coated in Gloss black with Gold stripes and graphics. Finishing the look externally is a set of polished 17” Shelby American racing wheels.

Open the door and you will be greeted with a neat custom interior to match the outside. The dash is fitted with Classic Instruments Autocross gauges and there is a Carol Shelby signature decal applied to the glove box lid. The seats are Procar Shelby style bucket seats split by a full-length console. The door trims are upgraded TMI items, and the rear seat is a proper fastback style seat trimmed to match. A Shelby roll bar/ seat belt brace hoops behind the front seats. To keep the tunes rocking there is a Retrosounds classic look stereo headunit with Alpine 6” speakers in the kick panels and 6×9” speakers mounted in the rear C pillar panels. Keeping things comfortable and cool inside is a new air conditioning system.

Under the bonnet is the original V8 block which has been fully rebuilt to 302ci by Fataz Competition Engines in Capalaba, QLD. The engine was bored and honed before receiving new pistons, rods and bearings. It also received a new timing set, oil pump, high lift hydraulic roller lifters and a Crow hydraulic roller cam. On top there is an Edelbrock RPM Performer intake and fuel is supplied by a new Holley Carburettor. The engine is well dressed with Shelby style rocker covers and air cleaner and the engine bay is neatly painted in gloss with billet hood hinges. Expelling gasses is a full custom exhaust system with Magnaflow mufflers.

The engine is paired to a C4 automatic transmission and power is fed to the rear wheels through a the factory differential. The front suspension has been rebuilt with new shocks and the rear has been converted from leaf springs to a four-link setup with adjustable coil overs. The brakes have also been upgraded to a power boosted system with discs on all four corners. The steering system received a massive upgrade to a Retrorack power steering system finished in polished aluminium which cost in excess of $4,000 alone. The underside of the Mustang is all neatly detailed with the floor all painted in gloss black to match the top side.

The build on the car has just been completed and it has been mod plated for QLD registration. High quality Mustang’s like this don’t come along very often so this is a fantastic opportunity to get one of the best around into your garage.
