1968 DODGE CHARGER 440 BIG BLOCK

The 1968 Dodge Charger is one of the most iconic American muscle cars of all time! The hideaway headlights and muscular ‘Coke bottle’ shape are iconic features. This is an awesome example of an extensively modified and upgraded, 1968 Dodge Charger. The car was purchased by the current owner in 2014 as a rolling shell that had been painted here in Australia in the iconic orange colour that was made famous by The Dukes of Hazzard. Rather than going down the ‘General Lee’ track with the build, the owner wanted to build a tough street Charger that would not only go well, but stop well, handle well, and look great while doing so.

The shell was already painted here in Australia when it was purchased, and the paintwork is well presented all around. New chrome front and rear bumpers were purchased for the car along with a fuel filler cap and new door handles. Likewise, the old, scratched glass was replaced with new items. Every other metal part that could be powder coated, has been – in black to give it a unique and more modern look. Finishing off the exterior is a set of chrome Show Wheels measuring 18×8” up front and 20×10” in the rear.

Open the door and the inside is neatly finished as the outside. Firstly, the interior was fully sound deadened using Fatmat Rattle Trap. Once this was complete, the car received a full new interior in cream and black including new carpet, headliner, door panels and front and rear seats. The centrepiece of the interior though it the custom fabricated aluminium dash with all new Autometer Cobalt Series gauges. There is a period style, aftermarket wood-rimmed steering wheel and a B&M quick shifter mounted between the front bucket seats. The rubbers have all been replaced and there is new wiring throughout.

Lift the bonnet and things start to get serious. The engine is a fully balanced, custom built 440 ci big block V8. It features forged pistons, Eagle H beam rods, 11.2:1 compression ratio, Mopar 509 Purple Hydraulic cam, Edelbrock Performer RPM aluminium heads, Edelbrock Torker 2 intake manifold and a Holley Brawler 850 carb. Keeping everything neat up front is a March Performance billet pulley kit. Spark is provided thanks to an Ice Ignition System. There is a new vacuum booster pump to keep the brake booster fed. Keeping everything cool is a PWR custom built radiator and trans cooler with twin thermo fans. Letting the gasses escape is a set of Hedman Elite long headers which are ceramic coated and paired to a custom dual exhaust.

The engine is mated to a Mopar 727 automatic gearbox which has been rebuilt by M1 Automatics. There is a 4500-torque converter and B&M Pro Ratchet shifter. Power is fed to the rear wheels via an Ultra 9 custom chromoly 3.5 inch drive shaft with Strange billet ends coupled to an Altra 9 custom fabricated 9 inch diff. The rear end includes heavy duty housing with studs fitted, 35 Spline 4140 USA large bearing flanged axles fitted with Timken bearings, ½” x 2″ screw in studs, retainer plates, HD Strange aluminium gearcase, Eaton Truetrac 35 spline with a 3.7:1 ratio, rated for over 1000hp. Fuel is housed in a reconditioned fuel tank with all new fuel lines.
