This 1967 Ford XR Fairmont has been reborn as an XR GT replica. The XR was the birth of the legend that would become the GT Falcon and it was at the time, largely Mustang Bred. The XR GT’s were only produced in one colour, Gold and there were only 596 produced in total making the real deal versions both very rare and collectible today. The outside of the car has been fully repainted in the signature GT Gold colour with the addition of a GT grille, GT badging and stripes. While it presents well in general, the paintwork on the car can be described as driver quality and worth trying to see in person if you’re fussy. The car sits down low over a set of 5 slot wheels and there is a battery isolation cut off mounted in the front grille.
Inside the car is trimmed in black with bucket seats and the Mustang style XR GT steering wheel. The gauges in the dash are all aftermarket and gives the car a bit of a modified feel. There is a T-bar shifter on the floor and an extinguisher mounted between the front seats. The boot is also neatly finished inside with new carpet and a neatly covered spare wheel.
Under the bonnet is a 289ci Windsor V8 engine which is neatly presented and upgraded with electronic ignition. Although the real GT’s were all manual cars, the engine in this one is paired to a C4 automatic transmission to make for a fun cruiser. The brakes are power assisted discs up front with drums in the rear. Recent work includes new control arms, upper and lower ball joints and a balanced tail shaft. There is also a long range 36 gallon fuel tank tucked under the back.
