This 1966 Ford Galaxie 500 Convertible is a rare American cruiser that blurs the line between luxury cruiser and muscle car. The car started life at the Ford Louisville plant as a Y code, 390ci V8 Galaxie 500 convertible finished in Ivy Green with Light Ivy Gold Vinyl interior and then sold new in Detroit.
The car was purchased by the current owner in 2019. He is a collector and enthusiast who purchased the car to use as a daily driver while he was holidaying in the USA. When Covid kicked off, he made the decision to bring the car home to Australia in June of 2020. The body of the car has been neatly restored and fully repainted in its original colour of Ivy Green. The front and rear bumpers were both refinished or replaced. The car sits on a set of 15” American Racing Salt Flat style wheels with new tyres.
The interior of the car is well presented in the factory Ivy Gold Crinkle and venetian pattern vinyl trim. There are bench seats front and rear with lap belts fitted for safety. A nice touch of luxury are the power windows and power convertible top which has been refurbished in white. The carpets are all new and the four speed Hurst shifter pokes up from the front floor.
Under the bonnet lives the factory Y code, 390ci big block V8 engine. A lot of these Galaxies are based 289ci cars so to have a big block certainly adds some muscle to the equation. The engine is paired to a four-speed top loader transmission for even more or a muscle car feel. Power is fed to the rear wheels through a nine inch diff. Brakes are factory discs up front with drums in the rear.
These Galaxie convertibles don’t come up very often and this one is cooler than most with a big block and a four-speed to bang through the gears.
