This 1963 Ford Falcon Sprint Convertible is a neat example of a collectible American classic. The 1963 Falcon Sprint was top of the line for the US Falcon range and the only time a V8 option was available in a first-generation Falcon. They were actually considered a 1963½ model, and these cars were produced in very limited numbers with 10,479 Sprint two-door hardtops produced and only 4602 Sprint convertibles produced. These first-generation Falcon Sprint cars were the basis for the 1964½ Mustangs released by Ford one year later. Many (if not most) of the interior, chassis, suspension, and drivetrain components were derived from those used on the 1963½ Ford Falcon Sprint and/or Fairlane models. In simplest terms, the 1963½ Falcon Sprint is nearly mechanically identical to the 1964½ Mustang, while being aesthetically different.

This particular example was purchased by the current owner approximately four years ago. He bought the car off a gent in Nashville, sight unseen who had owned it for five years. When the car was in the US, the owner had the philosophy that he should be able to jump in the car and drive across the US if he wanted to and maintained the car as such. When the car arrived in Australia, it was as expected and has been used as a daily driver by the current owner.

The body of the car was restored in the US approximately 15 years ago being repainted in its original colour of Y code Glacier Blue. The chrome and brightwork appears to have been refinished during the restoration and on a sprint there is a lot of it! The convertible top is power operated and received a new white canvas approximately five years ago. The car sits on a set of 15” Cragar chrome wheels for a cool period look.

Inside the car was retrimmed during the restoration in the factory two tone blue Vinyl. Being a Sprint model, it features bucket sets up front with chrome covered centre console and bench seat in the rear. There is also a Sprint tacho mounted on top of the dash board. The factory steering wheel remains in place with column shifter automatic transmission. An AM/FM radio and cassette player sits in the dash and there is a neat colour coded parade cover that clips on to cover the convertible top while its folded down.

Under the bonnet you will find the factory 260ci V8 engine. This sprint was the only first generation Falcon this was available in so its cool to see that wedged in there rather than a six banger like most of them were. The engine has been upgraded to be a reliable daily drive using an MSD electronic ignition system and distributer. Temps are kept in check thanks to a new alloy radiator. The engine is paired to the factory Ford-o-matic two speed automatic transmission. Power is fed to the rear wheels through the factory Ford 8-inch, 3.25 geared rear axle. The steering system has been upgraded with linkages from a 1965 model for a lighter steering feel. The brakes are the original drums which have been serviced and maintained. The suspension remains factory with new leaf springs in the rear.

These Falcon Sprint convertibles are fun and rare little classic cruisers being one of only 4,602 ever produced. Cruising down the road in a V8 powered classic American convertible is a feeling like no other and one that you really need to experience to appreciate.
