1957 VW Split Screen Kombi Van
This 1957 VW Kombi is an original Australian delivered RHD split screen bus that was delivered new to Dubbo NSW. The current owner purchased the bus in original survivor condition from a gentleman near Byron bay who had owned it for 15 years. His plan was to restore the bus back to original however he unfortunately fell sick and the current owner purchased it circa 2005. The bus was chosen because it had a very good body and was still wearing its original Boronia Brown paintwork which was only used on these Kombi’s for 3 years. Sure, it had some patina and dents around it, but the current owner tells us he “rescued it from being refinished and repainted, the patina is part of it’s story. “
The body was very good in general, the floors were sand blasted to check for rust where only a few minor repairs were required. There was also a small section at the bottom of the cargo doors that needed to be replaced but other than these few items the bus was nice and solid. The perished rubbers were replaced by all new rubbers and seals. Underneath was painted in 2 pack, the semaphores work and the bus has custom LEDs in the bumpers. The rest of the body was just a preservation of the original Patina.
Once the body was sorted, it was time to upgrade everything else. A phone call was made to Pat Downs at CB Performance in the United States who went over the engine requirements. The owner’s brief was that he wanted something with plenty or torque and power, that he could reliably drive to Sydney and back without having to mess with it all the time. The result was a 2332cc CB performance engine that was shipped over from the US. The engine features full flow oil cooler and twin matching numbers 44 Italian Weber’s. The engine is paired to a Rancho pro street plus gearbox (freeway flyer) with hydraulic clutch. There is also a larger 65L fuel tank sourced from a bay window Kombi for less stops between servos.
The bus sits slammed on airbag suspension all round with IRS rear suspension, new drop spindles, Creative Engineering air ride front and rear end, Accuair ECU and wiring, air ride technologies big red valve blocks and twin Viair high flow air compressors. The brakes have been upgraded to Wilwood 4 Piston calliper brakes and remote brake booster and cross drilled rotors. Recent work includes new king and link pins, new tie rods, new wheel bearings. The Bus sits on a set of genuine Porsche Teledial wheels all round and has been fully engineered for NSW.
Inside the bus has been retrimmed in real dark drown coloured leather on the front and rear bench seats. The side panels have been refinished in beige as has the divider wall. The paintwork inside again is original and brings the patina look into the interior. The headlining is all new and so are the rubber mats on the floor. The steering wheel and dash are all original items with a few aftermarket gauges discreetly fitted to the lower half of the dash. Airflow in the cabin is fantastic thanks to the front pop out safari windows!
While this Split screen Kombi has a cool ratty look about it, the bus certainly has had some time and money invested into it. The bus has a story to tell, and one that thanks to the updated running gear and repairs required to keep it moving, will continue for many years to come. If you want to be the next part of this bad ass Bus’ history, be sure to reach out to us to help make it happen.
