1957 CHEVY 3100 LS PICKUP
This 1957 Chevy 3100 big back window pick up has been through an extensive ground-up build into an awesome and tough street truck. The truck was purchased by the current owner as a complete truck but there were always bigger plans for it.
The truck was transported over to BMV fabrications on the Sunshine Coast to be torn down and completely redone. Starting with the chassis, the rails were boxed, K-framed and notched, featuring a parallel four-link rear end with a Panhard bar. The front end is a TCI Mustang II item with rack and pinion power steering. The control arms are chrome plated and the chassis was smoothed before being painted in satin black. Suspension is supplied buy Ride Tech adjustable coil overs all round however, the car was set up to easily be able to swap these out for airbags if the new owner chose to do so. Providing braking power is a set of Wilwood disc brakes on all four corners measuring 12” up front and 11” in the rear. The brake lines are all neatly run along the chassis. The fuel cell has been relocated from inside the cab to under the rear of the tub with a 1000hp fuel pump and braided lines running to the engine bay.
Under the bonnet, there is a new crate LS3 6.2L Chevy V8 engine featuring upgraded cam, fly by wire throttle, Victor Jr. manifold and retro Holley coil covers. The engine is nicely detailed in all black with work carried out by Shane Alex Race Engines. The truck is currently putting out 425hp at the rear wheels which makes for a fast and fun street truck! The engine has the OEM air conditioning compressor which runs the vintage air system, OEM power steering pump and front drive kit. The rumble of the engine is enhanced through a set of hand-built headers flowing into a custom exhaust featuring Magna Flow mufflers that exit out under the steps on each side. Keeping everything cool is a brand new VF Commodore radiator. The engine is paired to a 4L65E, 4-speed automatic transmission rated for 650hp and built by Craig’s Autos in Sydney. Power is fed to the rear wheels via a custom fabricated 9” diff with 35 spline billet floating axles.
The body of the truck is the original sheet metal that has been refinished in a faux patina paintjob. There is a satin clear over the top of the paintwork and an old school hand painted logo on the door. The logo can be removed without damaging the paintwork underneath if the new owner decided to do so. The only modification to the cab itself is the addition of Altman door latches which is a huge improvement over the originals. The chrome bumper, grille and headlight surrounds on the front end have been replaced and are in good condition. The tub in the rear has had the tops and ends of the bed rails shaved and smoothed along with wheel tubs on the inside for clearance. There is a new bed wood kit placed on a hinged frame which lifts on gas struts. Underneath there are custom watertight, storage compartments along with access to the notch and rear suspension. Completing the look externally is a set of American Racing wheels measuring 20×10” up front and 20×12” in the rear. The owner tells us that the truck is set up to run a rear wheel up to 14” wide if you desired. The wheels have two sets of centre caps, a tri-bar knock off look and a normal cap. The car is pictured with different caps on each side just to show the two looks however both sets will come with the truck.
Inside the truck still runs the gloss paintwork which is a nice touch in contrast to the patina look exterior. There are new German Weave style carpets on the floors. The bench seat, door trims, head liner and sun visors have all been refinished in a distressed-look tan with basket weave style inserts. Front and centre is an aftermarket tilt steering column with Forever Sharp steering wheel. Mounted to the floor is a 32” Lokar Radical automatic gear shifter with piston knob. There is a set of Autometer gauges in the dash along with the controls for the vintage air conditioning and a tacho mounted to the column. There is a hidden stereo with tweeters up front and amplifier and 10” sub hiding behind the seat.
Since the truck was completed in June 2018, it has only travelled approximately 7,500kms. All the work is engineer certified and mod plated for QLD. This is a cool but understated truck from the outside that has been extensively upgraded with the best available gear underneath to transform it into an incredible driving experience.
