This 1971 Holden HQ LS Monaro has been through a full ground up restoration with some tasteful modifications. The car rolled off the line from GMH’s Dandenong plant in Melbourne in August of 1971. From factory the car was a Luxury Sport Model (LS) fitted with a 202ci 6 cyl engine and Trimatic automatic transmission. The car was purchased by the current owner way back in 1986 so has been in his possession for 37 years. He only drove the car until it ran out of registration in 1987 and then it was parked up in the garage. At first he planned to tinker with it a little bit and change a few things but that escalated into a full blown nut and bolt rebuild during his spare time over a number of years. The project was on again and off again, always stored inside when it was on the back burner. The owner was based in Victoria back then but brought the car with him when he relocated to Queensland in 2019.

In 2018, the decision was made that the car had been sitting for too long and the build was prioritised. By then it was a bare shell, given it had been well stored for many years, it had very little rust with just a small patch about the size of a 20c piece under the old vinyl roof and an old repair that required fixing on the rear qtr panel. With these complete, the car was completely repainted in Alpha Roosa which was an Alpha Romeo colour. The body colour extends to the underside of the floor pans. The chrome bumpers were refinished and the car sits on a set of 14” GTS style steel wheels.

Inside the car has been completely refinished too, this time by Megatrim in Dandenong Victoria. The seats were completely pulled apart and rebuilt with all new mechanisms and new foam before being recovered in black with Houndstooth insert. The dash was upgraded to a GTS style item with fishscale facia. The carpets, headlining and door trims were all replaced. The door and boot rubbers were replaced with a bunch of other misc parts from Rare Spares.

The old six banger is gone from under the bonnet and was replaced with a brand new 383ci Chevy V8 crate engine from Eagle Auto Parts. The engine was purchased complete top to bottom with receipt for over $12,000. The engine starts with a 4 bolt main Blueprint block and is fitted with Edelbrock E-Street aluminium heads, hydraulic roller cam, cast steel crank, Hypereutectic Pistons, 10.0:1 compression ratio and topped with a Weiand Warrior intake and Holley 750 cfm carburettor. The engine is rated at 436hp and has only travelled 109 kms from new and is still on its run in oil and period.

The engine is paired to a Turbo 400, three speed automatic transmission which was rebuilt by Gilroys automatics. The auto features a stage 2 trick shift kit and 2500rpm stall converted. Power is fed to the rear wheels through a rebuilt Salisbury diff with limited slip 3.55 ratio centre. Fuel is supplied by a new electric fuel pump mounted under the back of the car. The cooling system has been upgraded with a new alloy radiator and twin thermo fans. The brakes and suspension have all been rebuilt. The engine bay is well detailed with billet hood hinges and braided lines and hoses.

The owner noted that the only item not rebuilt on the car are the front window mechanisms, while they go up and down ok, they are a little clunky. Everything else on the car has been rebuilt at some stage during the resto. The sale of the car comes with a verification letter from Holden, complete registration certificate from 1987 when it was pulled off the road as well as receipts for the new crate engine and trans rebuild. After owning the car for so long and putting so much time, effort and money into the car, he has regretfully decided to sell due to a relocation overseas. For this reason, we are running the car at NO RESERVE and it will sell to the highest bidder come the end of the auction.
