This 1977 Lincoln Continental Town Coupe was the height of American Luxury in the late 70s. These cars were built for high society and in a time where bigger was better. They were packed full of the latest gadgets and luxuries at the time and finished with premium materials.
This example was built in February of 1977 and sold new through Foxgate Lincoln Mercury in Memphis, Tennessee. The selling dealer badge still remains fitted to the trunk of the car today. The car is believed to be a genuine low milage example currently displaying only 42,500 miles.
The body of the car is well presented in its original colour of Dove Gray. This car come from an era where they believed bigger was better, and they didn’t come much bigger than this, especially for a coupe. The car is a massive 5.9m long and over 2m wide with plenty of room inside for 5 passengers in comfort. Lincoln external styling was always about understated elegance to you will see long flat sides and plenty of chrome. The vacuum operated hide away headlights and stand up centre grille are iconic for Lincolns of this period. The half vinyl roof ads a subtle but elegant touch. The car sits on its original wheels and hubcaps with white wall tyres.
Inside the car is all about luxury with premium finished of woodgrain and high quality leather. The seats are finished in matching grey leather and are as plush and comfortable as they look, with fold down arm rests all round and plenty of room both front and rear. The car is fully loaded with options from the factory including power seats, power windows, power door locks, remote boot release, remote mirrors, air conditioning and even cruise control. The power windows are unique with little roll down quarter windows which operate from the same switch as the main window in sequence. There is woodgrain trim in the rear, on the doors and across the dash. The digital clock is even Cartier branded.
Being such a large luxury car, it couldn’t be under powered so Lincoln fitted the cars with a massive 460ci V8 engine. The engine is paired to the factory, column shifted, three speed automatic transmission. Power is fed to the rear wheels through a nine inch diff. Again, to pull the car up requires substantial brakes so they car is fitted with power assisted disc brakes up front and drums in the rear. The suspension on these cars is designed for comfort and to eat up highways. They float down the road like nothing else you’ve ever driven.
