This 1976 Holden HX Sandman panel van has been through a full ground up nut and bolt restoration into a one off custom restomod. The car left the factory as a genuine HX Sandman windowless panel van finished in Mandarin Red and running a 253ci V8 engine with a four speed manual transmission. The previous owner was a motor trimmer by trade and built the car from the ground up.

The body was removed from the chassis and stripped bare before being placed on a rotisserie. Any necessary repairs were made to the van along with some other notable additions including the twin headlight front end and the fluted front guards. With this complete the body was professionally repainted in its original colour of Mandarin Red including the underside of the floors. With the paintwork complete, the Sandman black outs, decals and stripes were applied. While it remains windowless down the side there is a tinted bubble window in the rear. All of the chrome and trim on the outside of the car was refinished or replaced and the look is completed with a set of 17” GTS style wheels.

Being a motor trimmer by trade, naturally the inside of the van also received a full retrim. Up front is pretty standard with the typical black interior with GTS/Sandman appointments. A hint that something non-original may be lurking under the bonnet is the later model auto shifter which has been neatly integrated into the console. Behind the front seat is a custom trimmed wall with opening that can be closed off at the flick of a switch by a built in, secure electric roller shutter. In the back there is a mix or carpet and suede with custom lighting built into the roof.  It’s extremely well done with the classy approach taken over the usual ‘over the top’ van fit outs. Creature comforts inside include power steering, power brakes, power windows, rear view mounted reverse camera, central locking and alarm. There is a decent stereo integrated throughout the van with Bluetooth connectivity for tunes while cruising.

Under the bonnet now lives a late model, fuel injected, 6.0L LS2 V8 engine. The engine is paired to a matching 6L80e six speed automatic transmission. The LS2 provides a huge bump in horsepower over the original 253, while also increasing reliability.  The brakes have been upgraded to power assisted four-wheel discs to pull up that new found horsepower. The suspension has all been fully rebuilt with lowered springs for a cool stance. Under the rear is a big custom aluminium drop tank so you don’t have to stop at the servo as often. The cooling system has been upgraded with a new alloy radiator and thermos fans while the exhaust escapes through a set of four into one long tube headers feeding a custom dual exhaust. The engine bay and undercarriage are extremely well presented and look neatly factory in appearance.

If you’re looking for a cool restomod Sandman Panel van, they don’t come much cooler than this one! The car is a genuine Sandman, in a desirable colour combo and has been fully rebuilt from the ground up and is jamb packed with almost every feature you could ever want in one of these. The car is mod plated for QLD and has travelled approximately 12,000 kms Since completion.
