This 1974 Holden HJ Panel Van is a genuine Sandman that has been through a full rotisserie restoration. The van started life at GMH’s Elizabeth plant in Adelaide where is rolled off the line on the 22^nd of October 1974. The van was finished in code 1890 Mandarin Red with 19V black interior and fitted with an L32 4.2L V8 High compression engine and M20 four speed manual transmission. The car was sold new in April of 1975 through Rod Hodgson Holden in Cabramatta, NSW.

The current owner purchased the car a few years back, it was in reasonably good shape but in need of a restoration so in 2021 the car was taken off the road for a full rotisserie resto. The body was stripped back to a bare shell and sandblasted inside and out. The body was pretty good for its age, reasonably straight and minimal rust. Any necessary repairs were made before the car was professionally repainted in its original colour of Mandarin Red. The signature black Sandman decals were reapplied to the car and a custom airbrushed mural painted on the tail gate. The exterior chrome and trim was all either refinished or replaced and the glass is new all round. The custom mural on the tail gate and front nose panel have both been ceramic wrapped to protect the paintwork. The exterior is completed with a set of 15×7” and 15×8” custom chrome banded GTS wheels.

Open the door and you will be greeted with an all new factory style interior by Cutting Edge Trimming at Burleigh Heads. The interior features black bucket seats, centre console and correct GTS style steering wheel and dash. The back is all done like factory with full length headliner put painted side panels and custom mattress on the floor. There is a hidden stereo with a Retrosounds original look Bluetooth headunit, amplifier under the passenger seats, trim centre dash speaker, small kick panel speakers and nine inch speakers in customised rear panels.

Under the bonnet is a 253ci high compression Holden V8 engine. It’s the same type the car left the factory with but not the original block to the car. The engine bay is extremely well detailed back to full factory presentation. The only modification you can see is a set of extractors. The engine is paired to a four-speed manual transmission with a new clutch and pressure plate fitted during the resto. Power is fed to the rear wheels through the factory Salisbury 10 bolt diff with 3.08 open centre. The suspension has been rebuilt with new springs and shocks throughout along with all new bushes up front. The brakes are factory standard with rebuilt calipers up front and new pads which the rear drums were machined with new wheel cylinders and shoes. The car is fitted with Holden power steering for an improved driving experience. The owner tells us that every nut, bolt and all fittings are either reconditioned or replaced.

This is a fantastic example of a fully restored and genuine Sandman panel van. Examples like this don’t come along very often so be sure to register and bid if you want to have this one in your life.
