This 1971 Holden HQ Monaro Coupe has been through a full ground up restoration and tastefully modified into a tough street car. The Monaro started life in GMH’s Dandenong plant in Melbourne rolling off the production line in September of 1971. The car is tagged as a genuine 80837 coded GTS Monaro and was fitted with a 253ci V8 engine and four speed manual transmission. The previous owner put the car through a full bare metal restoration and tastefully modified the car into what you see today before it was purchased by the current owner in late 2021.
The body of the car has been completely stripped to a shell and taken back to bare metal. It received any necessary repairs before being professionally repainted in Mazda Metallic Red with white GTS stripes. The front and rear bumpers were both refinished at the same time. To complete the look externally, the car sits low over a set of chrome Weld Pro Star 15” wheels.
Inside the car has been completely retrimmed during the resto. The carpets were replaced on the floors and there is a new headliner over head. The seats and door cards received new black trim in the factory pattern. The factory GTS dash and wheel remain in place. The only item not factory spec inside is the B&M ratchet shifter between the front bucket seats.
Under the bonnet now lives a fully built 383ci Chevy stroker V8. The engine build features 10.5:1 compression, Eagle crank and rods, forged pistons, Dart alloy 210cc heads, roller rockers, Crane Cam, Holey single plane manifold and Quickfuel 750 Double Pumper Carb. Spark is provided by an MSD electronic ignition with 6AL control box. The engine runs on 98 octance pump fuel and is fed by a Holley Blue electric fuel pump from a custom alloy 90L tank. Exhaust gasses are expelled by a set of 1 ¾ inch four into one extractors into a 2 ½ inch exhaust system with Mangaflow stainless mufflers. Keeping things cool is a large alloy radiator paired to an electric water pump and thermo fan.
The engine is paired to a Turbo 400 automatic transmission with 3000 rpm stall converter and B&M ratchet shifter. Power is fed to the rear wheels through a nine inch diff with 3.55 ration Trutrac centre and 31 spline billet axles. We are told the engine package was set up to make around 500hp at the rear wheels. The suspension is rebuilt with new springs, shocks and sway bars front and rear. The steering is power assisted as are the brakes.
This is a fantastic opportunity to purchase a genuine HQ GTS Coupe that has been tastefully modified into a tough street car.
