This 1967 Ford Mustang Fastback has been through a full ground up, nut and bolt custom build into one of the country’s coolest custom Mustangs. The build was undertaken over a number of years by Southern Rod and Customs in Shepparton, Victoria.

Starting with the body, the car was stripped back completely to a bare shell. Any necessary repairs undertaken. There are some subtle custom modifications in the body like the custom side vents and vents behind the side windows. The lower front valance is custom made to fit the front spot lights and there is a Shelby style bonnet vent with ring brothers bonnet pins. In the back the tail lights have been flush mounted for a smooth and more modern look and the fuel filler sunk into the back panel. The entire body has been professionally painted in gloss black with white stripes over the top. All of the glass was replaced and all of the chrome and stainless trim was refinished or replaced. To complete the external look, the car sits on a set of custom made Billet Specialties Legacy 2 wheels measuring 18” up front and 20” in the rear.

Inside the car has been treated to a full custom retrim. The first thing you will notice is that the car has been converted to right hand drive during the build. The dash is mostly smoothed with Autometer gauges showing you what’s happening under the hood. Front and centre is an aftermarket tilt column holding a Grant steering wheel. The seats have been upgraded to Procar items that have been custom trimmed in leather and suede. There is a custom centre console to house the automatic quick shifter and handbrake. Overhead there is a new suede headliner and there are new carpets on the floor. The cabin is kept cool thanks to a Vintage Air air conditioning system. Remote central locking adds a nice modern touch.

Pop the bonnet and you will find an extremely well detailed engine bay housing a 347ci Windsor stroker V8 engine. The car actually started life as an S code, 390 big block car but the owner happened to be having coffee with Aussie racing royalty, Allan Moffat one day and they were discussing the build. Allan said to him “You’re not going to put that 390 back in it are you, those are bloody truck motors”. So, on his advice, the decision was made to run with a tough small block instead. The engine itself is a new crate engine from Edelbrock and is covered in chrome where ever possible with a March serpentine belt drive kit up front. There is a Total control Products shock tower brace and billet hood hinges with the engine bay neatly smoothed and gloss painted to match the exterior. Keeping things cool is an upgraded radiator with thermo fan setup and the battery has been relocated to the boot.

The engine is paired to a C4 automatic transmission with quick shifter and power is fed to the rear wheels through a nine inch diff. Underneath the car has been extensively upgraded with front and rear suspension from Total Control Products. The front suspension features tubular A-Arms and adjustable coil overs while the rear is now four-linked with adjustable coil overs. The brakes have been upgraded to be power assisted with Wilwood dual master cylinder feeding Baer four wheel disc brakes with drilled and slotted rotors all round. The steering has been upgraded to a Total Control Products power rack and pinon setup.

The car has travelled very few test kms since completion and has spent a fair amount of its time on display in Southern Rod and Customs showroom. The car has been fitted with a blue modification plate for Victoria. This is a chance to own one of the coolest custom 67 Mustang Fastbacks in the country, be sure to register and bid if you want to see this badass pony parked in your garage.
