The 1959 year model is widely considered to be the peak of American automotive styling. The cars were big, luxurious, featured lots of chrome and largely ‘space race’ inspired with their styling. This 1959 Oldsmobile 98 Scenic Coupe is no exception, although much rarer than the Cadillacs and Chevy’s you more commonly see from that era.

This particular example was purchased from the Volo Auto Museum in Illinios back in 2005 before being imported over to Western Australia. The car had previously been restored in the US but when it arrived here, well known Cadillac restorer Ross Mogan pulled the car apart again and redid almost all of it. This car being a ‘Ninety-eight’ was top of the line in the Oldmobile range and is as well equipped as an optioned-up Cadillac of this era.

During the restoration, the body of the car was placed on a rotisserie before receiving any necessary repairs and being fully repainted in its signature two-tone colour scheme in a burgundy and white. The chrome on the outside of the car, and there is a lot, was all either refinished or replaced. The glass was replaced as was the weather stripping. The tail lights have a unique concave design that is jet age inspired. Completing the factory look, the car sits over a set of wide white wall tyres with correct 59 hubcaps.

Inside the car has also been fully restored and is extremely well equipped for a car of this era. The pillarless body style provides great visibility as well as an open feel inside the cabin. The whole interior was refinished here in Australia using the correct materials sourced from the US. The interior styling is uniquely 50s and has some great features like the deep dish, dual spoke steering wheel. Creature comforts inside the car include air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, power windows, power seat and autronic eye automatic headlight dimmer. In the glove box there is a factory optional, pull out, picnic radio as well as an aftermarket stereo system hidden away to enjoy tunes while cruising. Inside the boot is also fitted out to factory specs with matching spare wheel and original style jack.

Under the bonnet of the Olds lives the fully rebuilt, 394ci ‘Rocket’ V8 engine. The engine bay is highly detailed to a factory standard. The engine is paired to the factory ‘Jetaway’ Hydramatic, automatic transmission and power is fed to the rear wheels via the factory limited slip diff. The engine transmission and differential were all fully rebuilt during the restoration. The suspension is rebuilt factory items and the factory power brakes have been upgraded to include discs up front with factory drums in the rear.

The sale of the car includes one of the largest collections of original sales brochures, advertising material, dealer memos, manuals and memorabilia I have ever seen with a car of this era. This is a super rare example of a fully restored, late 50s, luxury American cruiser. Cars like this don’t come up very often, be sure to register and bid if you want to see this one parked in your garage.
