This 1955 Holden FJ Sedan has been fully rebuilt into a mild custom show car called “Simply Red”. The FJ was purchased by the current owners back in April of 1994. We are told it was stock, but in excellent condition and driven around that way right up until 2001 when it pulled off the road for a 5 year, full rebuild.
Starting with the body, the FJ was stripped back to bare metal where only a small amount of rust was found in the passenger side outer sill. This was repaired and replaced while all of the floor pans and panels remain original to the car. The car was then fully repainted for its original blue to Holden Sting Red using Glasurit 2 pac. At the same time, all of the chrome on the car was completely refinished. Completing the look on the outside is a set of fully rechromed 15×7” steel wheels wrapped in Goodyear T/A radial tyres.
Inside the car was completely refinished in a mild custom fashion. The front bench was replaced by HR Premier bucket seats with the original FJ bench retained in the rear. For safety, seat belts were fitted all round. The original rubber floor mat was replaced with quality woollen carpet. There is a custom centre console housing temp, oil and amp gauges and all of the dash was refinished with white faces. The entire interior was recovered in a custom grey vinyl with red and black cloth insert. Cruising tunes are provided by a Sony headunit feeding 6 inch speakers in the doors and 6x9s in the parcel shelf. The boot is completely fitted out with a custom show install featuring 6mm glass to show relocated battery in stainless box, chrome spare wheel, tool kit, fire extinguisher and first aid kit.
Under the bonnet is a 138ci Holden Grey motor which was fully rebuilt in 2009 and converted to run unleaded fuel. The engine features a reground 25/65 camshaft, twin Stromberg carburettors, Jet-Hot coated extractors and a 2 inch stainless steel exhaust system. The engine bay is fully detailed with lots of chrome and stainless used throughout. The engine is paired to an Opel sourced, four speed manual transmission and power is fed to the rear wheels through a 3.36 ration differential. Under the back there is a 60 litre stainless steel drop tank and the car is lowered all round using Pedders Sports Ryder coil springs with front and rear sway bars. Steering has been upgraded to a HG steering box and the brakes are power boosted with all new stainless steel lines.
Since the build was completed, the car has been extremely kept by its fastidious owner, only having travelled 7,000 miles or so during this time, mostly to shows and back. It has been extremely successful at shows having won in excess of 80 trophies including Best Modified Street Custom at the FX/FJ Nationals, Top sedan at the Qld FX/FJ State Titles, Best Street Machine 1949-1970 at the Queensland Hot Rod and Street Machine Spectacular on 2 occasions, best 1948-1970 vehicle at Harrigans car show 5 years in a row, best FJ sedan at All Holden day on eight occasions, numerous top paint, top interior, top engine bay and peoples choice awards.
