This 1968 Chevy Corvette has been through a full restoration with some tasteful upgrades. 1968 saw the beginning of the third generation for Corvette (C3) with a completely redesigned car from the previous model year.  The early chrome bumper C3 Corvettes are extremely desirable now days and good examples like this are thin on the ground.

This example has been in Australia for many years and underwent a full ground up rebuild over 5 years, finally completed in 2007. The car was purchased with cosmetic damage from a previous owner who’s mechanic had got a little over confident during a test drive in the rain and tangled with a steal road barrier. Given all of this was going to be redone anyway, the car was a good candidate for a full build into a mild custom. The car was stripped back to a bare frame for the restoration and rebuilt from there. The body of the corvette was professionally refurbished with some subtle changes including an L88 style hood. The car was then fully repainted in Medium Gray with Mercury metallic in a clear over base using PPG paint. The chrome bumpers were refinished and the optional side pipes give the car a nice rumble. To complete the look externally, the car is lowered slightly over a set of 15” GM Rally wheels.

The inside of the car was refurbished at the same time with the most notable difference being that the car is converted to right hand drive. There is an aftermarket wood rimmed steering wheel with tilt and telescopic adjustment on the column. While the seats were redone with the rest of the interior during the restoration, it should be noted that the bases have split at the seam. The convertible soft top was also replaced during the restoration and folds back neatly behind the front seats. The stereo system has been upgraded and there is an immobiliser fitted for added security.

Under the bonnet lives a new 350ci chevy V8 engine that was supplied and fitted by Chevron Automotive on the Gold Coast in 2015. The engine features an Edelbrock intake, Holey carb and MSD ignition system. The engine is paired to a four speed Muncie manual transmission and power is fed to the rear wheels through the factory diff. The suspension is factory style with heavy duty lowered springs and was refurbished during the restoration. The brakes are power assisted four wheel discs. The steering is power assisted for easy maneuverability.

Upon completion the car won best convertible at the South Coast Nationals in 2007 and 2008 as well as Best Corvette at the Canberra Chevy nationals in 2007. The car was also featured in Vette magazine in the US in June of 2009. These early chrome bumper C3 Corvettes are iconic American sports cars and this one has been rebuilt with some neat upgrades into a cool cruiser.
