This 1963 Ford XL Falcon Futura is a rare bird that has been neatly restored with some neat upgrades into a cool classic cruiser. You don’t see Futuras very often, but they were a cool up market addition in Ford’s Falcon range, they only came in black or white, all came with red trim, bucket seats and consoles for a much sportier and premium trim.
This particular vehicle was purchased by the current owner around 2010. We are told that the car was sold new in Toowoomba before heading down to South Australia for a while, then up into the Northern Territory before coming back to Brisbane where it was purchased by the current owner.
The body of the car has been fully repainted in its factory Marino white hue, one of only two colours available on the Futura. The previous owner’s son owned a panel shop and performed the work on the car back in 2009. During the current ownership all of the chrome, stainless trim and badges on the car have either been replaced or refinished. There is also an accessory visor on the car and it is lowered over a set of 14” steel wheels with chrome Thunderbird hubcaps which give it a subtle and unique custom look.
The inside of the car has received a full factory style retrim, again about 15 years ago during the previous owner’s restoration. The factory bright Red trim is an awesome combo with the white paintwork. A Futura staple is the front bucket seats split by a centre console for a premium feel. Another insteresting feature of these cars is the factory Futura trim through the dash and down through the doors as well as the chrome around door handles. There is a factory heater in place for those cool evenings. The dash pad has been removed with it painted to match the trim however the pads are available to purchase and everything is in place should the new owner wish to return this. A Rear venetian finishes things off nicely.
Under the bonnet is the original 170ci inline 6 cyl pursuit engine that has been upgraded with a mild cam and a dual exhaust system. The engine is paired to the factory two speed automatic transmission with both said to have been rebuilt during the restoration. The differential is the standard item and the suspension has been upgraded with an aftermarket sway bar with lowered coils up front and lowering blocks in the rear. The standard braking system remains in place but has been fully refurbished with all rebuilt drums all round, shoes and wheels cylinders.
These little Falcon Futura’s are a cool little classic Aussie cruiser and a rare and upmarket model in the Falcon range. Being a six banger, its P plate legal which is great for our younger gear heads. These cars don’t hit the market very often and this is one of the best examples you will ever find.
