This 1936 Hudson Terraplane business coupe has been through a full restoration. The Terraplane brand was a division of the Hudson Motor Car Company based in Detroit, Michigan. The division was created in 1932 and initially labelled as Essex-Terraplane before dropping the Essex in 1934. The company produced powerful yet inexpensive cars and trucks. The company only lasted until 1938 When it was branded as Hudson Terraplane before the Terraplane brand was retired.

This 1936 Hudson Terraplane business coupe was fully restored in the USA before being imported to Australia. The restoration took place in Arizona where we are told over $68,000 USD was spent on rebuilding the car, not including the initial cost of the car itself. The business coupe body style was a large three seater with no back seat, instead opting for a larger luggage space for travelling salesmen. The body of this car has been completely refinished and professionally repainted in two tone blue. There are some minor chips around the car from use since the restoration. The chrome bumpers have been refinished as has the unique grill and other brightwork. Other unique styling features include a split rear window and rear mounted spare wheel. Completing the look externally is a set of Artillery wheels with original hubcaps and period wide white wall tyres.

Inside the car has been completed refinished to factory specs in a tan vinyl. The dash is minimalistic with dual glove boxes and centre mount gauge cluster which made it easy to manufacture in either left or right hand drive. The steering wheel and gear shift are restored original items and the entry and exit are made easy through suicide opening doors. The carpets and seat trim have all been replaced and the boot is neatly fitted out to match.

Under the bonnet lives the original 212ci flat head straight 6cyl engine that has been fully rebuilt. The engine is paired to a floor shifted, three speed manual transmission. It should be noted that the car currently has an issue with the clutch and will not engage a drive gear, see important note at end for more information on this. A conventional tailshaft is connected to the factory differential. As you would expect on a car of this era, the suspension is leaf springs front and rear. The brakes are hudraulic drums all round which have just received new wheel cylinders.

This is a rare and fully restored pre-war classic car. You don’t see these Terraplanes very often and the unique body styling separates it from other cars of this era. Repair the clutch and enjoy it how it is or turn it into a unique custom or hot rod, the choice is yours. This car is selling at NO RESERVE and will be sold to the highest bidder come end of auction!

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR THIS LOT: while the car has been fully restored, when the car was being loaded to send up us for sale, one of the front brakes was locked on due to a jammed wheel cylinder. As an attempt to free the brake up while loading onto the truck, the owners representative used the power of the car to try and break it free. Unsuccessful in this, the car was sent to us with the wheel still locked on which our workshop was able to resolve with new wheel cylinders. Unfortunately, in the process of trying to free up the brake, it appears to have damaged or burnt out the clutch mechanism. Unfortunately, this is something we are unable to resolve here so the car is being sold as is with bidders needing to factor in they will need to repair whatever this issue may be once it arrives to them and will need to be transported as a non-runner. The engine runs well and brakes now work however as expected but when put into gear and the clutch released the car does not engage the gear or move.

IMPORTANT: Vehicle information is provided to us by the consignee. We do everything we can to qualify the best cars in the Australian market to represent on consignment for private sellers however, they are still old cars and we can’t capture everything in the photos, we don’t drive them any significant distance and can’t know everything about them. It is the responsibility of the buyer to have thoroughly inspected the vehicle, and to have satisfied themselves as to the condition and value and to purchase based upon that judgement solely. Vehicles may have been sitting for some time and it is suggested that to protect your investment, you allow to change fuel, oil, fluids, filters and inspect brakes prior to use. All vehicles are sold under standard auction conditions, consignment and auction vehicles are sold as is, without registration unless otherwise stated and there is no cooling off period or warranty expressed, written or implied. All sales are final. Independent inspections are welcome and strongly encouraged to help with your decision making.
