This 1962 Chevrolet Corvette has been through a ground up build and extensively upgraded into a one-off custom restomod. The C1 Corvettes were the beginning of a legacy. Today, 70 years from the first Corvette and on its 8th generation, Corvette has cemented its place as America’s favourite sports car. These days, first generation cars are extremely desirable to collectors for their classic look and rarity, however the drive of a 60+ year old car can often not match the charm of its looks. This is where a restomod like this example can shine through by combining the best of classic styling with modern performance and reliability.
The new foundation for this car starts with a Street Shop mandrel-formed chassis. A lightweight yet rigid piece that incorporates C4 Corvette independent front and rear suspension and four-wheel disc brakes. Gone is the old suspension, instead being replaced with coil-over shocks at all four corners for an adjustable ride. Power rack-and-pinion steering is included for quick and responsive handling.
The Street Shop chassis accepts a wide variety of engine and transmission combinations, in this case a 6.0L LS2 V8 engine. The engine features dual K&N intake filters and Ram Air induction feeding a chromed Power Plus intake manifold. The engine’s deep growl is delivered by an all new stainless steel twin exhaust system. The engine is paired to a Tremec five-speed manual transmission for a real sports car experience. Dual temperature-activated Halon fire extinguishers protect the entire area beneath the hood for an extra margin of safety.
The body of the car received some subtle modifications while maintaining the overall classic lines. The rear guards were widened a total of four inches (two each side) to make room for extra wide wheels and rubber. The trim on the top of the guards and inside of the coves was deleted for a smoother look. All of the chrome was refinished or replaced and the body of the car was professionally painted in a deep gloss black with silver coves. The restored original style soft top remains in place with all new black canvas. The car sits down low over a set of 18 inch Budnik X series wheels with brand new tyres just fitted up front.
Inside the interior has been completely refinished in leather by Al Knoch interiors with special embroidery and matching leather steering wheel. The carpets are all brand new and much plusher than the originals. The original gauge cluster has been retrofitted with a host of AutoMeter Cobalt series gauges. Other interior comforts include power windows, power door locks and air conditioning.
The Vette has been Mod Plated and previously registered in QLD. Restomod C1’s like this don’t become available very often and are always popular when they are offered for sale.
