This 1957 Pontiac Star Chief has been through a full ground up restoration here in Australia. The car was imported from the US in 2004 and was a reasonable example to begin with. Other than a little faded paint, the car was complete and ran and drove well. The initial plan was to build a mild custom but once the car was here, it was decided that it was “too pretty to change” and a full factory style restoration commenced. The car was carefully disassembled, and the body was separated from the chassis before being stripped back to bare metal with any necessary repairs undertaken while it was in its undies. The car was then repainted in its original colour combination of Kenya Ivory and Silver Beige using two pack paint. All of the panels were painted off the car which has the advantage of leaving no overspray in the joins and shuts but makes for a more challenging reassembly. The bumpers and grille were rechromed and all of the stainless around the car straightened and polished. The car was then carefully reassembled with all new rubbers, tail light lenses, door handles and decals.

SMS Auto Fabrics in California were tasked with supplying all of the new interior trim to return the Pontiac back to factory on the inside. The seats, door trims, headliner and carpets are all exact reproductions of the original trim. The interior is very unique, with A-symmetric patterns on the front and rear seats. All of the switches and dials were refurbished and the original radio and clock were refitted to the car. The pillarless roof line means that the cabin feels light and airy inside and the drivers field of view has very few obstructions.

Under the bonnet the original 347ci V8 engine was fully rebuilt. The original Rochester carburettor was reconditioned and replaced on the top of the engine. The automatic transmission, although in good working order, was also reconditioned while it was out of the car to ensure longevity. The diff was in perfect working order so just given a minor reseal and the original radiator was re-cored.

Since the car was completed in 2006, it was won many awards at local car shows and gained plenty of admirers. The car was featured on the cover and was also the pull-out centre-fold poster in Australian Classic Car Magazine in November 2007.
