This 2013 Ultima GTR is not for the faint of heart! It’s essentially a hard core, fully fledged race car that is able to be fully street registered. Ultima Sports Cars Ltd may not be immediately recognisable to casual motoring enthusiasts, but they happen to be one of the most successful independent sports car manufacturers in the world and have been in business since 1983. During this time the small company has amassed a number of production car speed records with their in-house designed road cars. Ultima’s approach to sports car building has been a little different to most other manufacturers; the wild road-legal GTR built from 1999 to 2016 and was a mixture of top-spec outsourced mechanical components and an in-house chassis. It combined decades of Ultima’s racing and sports car building experience, and could be ordered in kit form or fully built up. Customers could choose from a variety of V8 powertrains, from the merely rapid to the spine compressing variety. The best of which can still embarrass most modern hypercars around a track. The quickest accelerating and decelerating supercar of all time and multiple world speed record holder. Official performance records timed around the Top Gear test track were a blistering 6.2 seconds per lap faster than the £450,000 Ferrari Enzo and 4.0 seconds per lap faster than the £1.5million Bugatti Veyron SS! None could match the GTR’s plethora of world speed acceleration and deceleration records.

This particular GTR was ordered in kit form by a gent in Vic and built professionally by Pinnacle Race & Road Works. The GTR is designed for a small block Chevy V8, generally an LS but in this case, the builder opted for the LS7, 427ci V8 engine. The engine has been recently rebuilt with fully forged internals and makes 425kw at the rear wheels. The engine is paired to a Porsche six-speed, manually shifted trans axle with Quaife LSD. Braking performance is provided by massive AP racing disc brakes with drilled rotors on all four corners.

The body of the car is finished in the original Black Gel Coat with a bunch of carbon fibre add ons including MacG side scoops, cannards and rear wing with billet posts. The silhouette of the car is low slung and looks more like a LeMans prototype than a road car. The tail lights are LED items and the exhaust is centre exit through the rear clam shell. There is a functional hood scoop feeding the mid mounted Chevy V8. The doors open upwards like every super should. Completing the look on the outside is a set of polished Ultima 18” wheels wrapped in Toyo R888 semi slick tyres.

Inside the car is all business with FIA approved roll cage sitting behind the two front race style seats. The seats are trimmed in leather with red stitching and harnesses while the dash is trimmed in suede. A Motec CDL3 dash reader provides all of the necessary information. There are some creature comforts though with air conditioning as well as central locking and alarm system. There is a surprising amount of room in the cabin and even though getting in and out is awkward, there is enough room for a driver well over 6 foot tall.

Since completion, the car has been out to a number of club events and track days but is primarily used as a street car. The amount of attention the car attracts on the street is like nothing you’ve ever seen, it literally parts traffic as it drives down the road. The car has been previously registered in both Victoria and Queensland. If you’re looking for a fast and fun weekend car that can seriously hold its own with hypercars around a race track, this is one for you to consider.
