This 1987 Holden VL Commodore has been fully rebuilt into a highly detailed HSV VL SS Group A Walkinshaw clone. It would take an extremely knowledgeable enthusiast to pick the difference between this vehicle and a genuine car. The rebuild took the owner several years, including acquiring all the hard-to-find genuine Group A parts, locating both used and NOS components where possible.
The car started life as a factory 304ci V8 engine and auto transmission. This was important, as this model provides the best base for the required transformation. The body was originally red but has been professionally resprayed in the signature Panorama Silver hue. Externally the car presents well, sporting the full 21-piece body-kit the cars are so famous for. Many of the bodykit pieces are genuine items on this car. The original Walkinshaw 16” wheels also have been fully reconditioned to look like new. The owner was fastidious in making sure every exacting detail is visually correct based on his thorough research.
The interior has been retrimmed in the required grey velour and tweed fabric, exclusive to the Group A. New grey carpets were used throughout with floor mats and grey scuff plates. The car also features the correct Walkinshaw instrument cluster and controls. Air conditioning keeps things comfortable inside the cabin.
Under the bonnet, the owner was able to source an original Walkinshaw 5.0L V8 fuel injected V8 with the correct and unique twin-throttle body set up. The engine is matched to the correct T5G 5-speed manual transmission. The differential is the period correct heavy-duty Borg Warner 3.08 LSD with fine spline axles. The brakes have been fully reconditioned all round including the brake servo and master cylinder.
With prices of genuine Walkinshaw Group A Commodores soaring through the roof, these iconic cars have become out of reach for many. This clone has been well researched and executed to the point where even the die hard enthusiasts could be fooled. A chance to own the icon for a fraction of the price you will pay for a genuine car.
