This 1985 Holden VK Commodore has been through a complete rebuild into a tough SS Blue Meanie restomod tribute. A VK HDT ‘Blue Meanie’ is one of the most collectible 80’s Aussie muscle cars and has become the icon of a generation. These days, genuine examples can fetch multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars and there is a huge market for well built replicas like this one. This car was purchased by the current owner back in 2022 before being stripped back completely for its rebuild.
On the outside, the car has been completely stripped back to bare metal before being fully repainted in Formula Blue and fitted with the HDT body kit and decals. The HDT kit includes a front bumper, grille, bonnet bulge and rear spoiler. The headlights are also fitted with HDT style covers. Anything that the owner could buy new for the car he did so including all new glass and rubbers even down to the door strikers. To finish the look on the outside, the car squats down low over a set of oversized, 19” HDT Aero style wheels.
Inside the trim looks just like you would expect to see in a real deal car. The car was trimmed by Top End Interiors in Cerulean Herringbone insert trim with genuine Scheel seats used. The dash has been retrofitted with a digital Holley EFI display which allows you to keep an eye on vital signs. The centre console has been neatly fitted with a B&M ratchet style shifter for the auto transmission. There is a genuine Brock Eurovox radio in the dash and the car has been cleverly fitted with aftermarket air conditioning run by an electric compressor mounted up under the dash and operated by the factory air con controls.
Lift the bonnet and thing get serious with a modern 6.0L fuel injected LS engine paired with a big single turbocharger. The engine features remote coil packs, a Holley Sniper throttle body, Fast LSX-R 102 intake and Mezeire enterprises electric water pump. Boost is controlled by a Turbosmart Progate 50 wastegate and intake temps are kept in check with heat shielding and a front mount intercooler. The engine cooling system has been upgraded with an aftermarket radiator and electric thermo fan. The engine is paired to built and manualised Turbo 350 automatic transmission. Power is fed to the rear wheels through a nine inch diff with billet axels and 3.5 gears. The engine bay is well presented with gas struts added to hold the bonnet up and battery relocated to the boot.
The suspension has been upgraded to include fully adjustable coil overs up front with strengthened lower control arms and Bilstein shocks in the rear. The brakes have been upgraded to four-wheel disc with VT Commodore brakes used up front. Steering is provided by the factory manual VK steering rack. The car has been completely rewired front to back for reliability.
