This 1984 Chevy G20 Van is a great example of a cool American period custom van. The van was actually one that Benny found on a trip to the US back in 2017 and was dubbed ‘Brown Sugar’. It was imported back to Australia before being purchased by the current owners in September of 2017.

The body of the van was professionally repainted in metallic brown and hand pin striped old school style all round. The van features a full body kit with flared guards and front spoiler. The chrome front and rear bumpers were refinished and there is a set of dummy side pipes. The headlight surrounds have been colour coded and a custom grille used with added spotlights. The roof of the van was recently repainted here in Brisbane where there was absolutely no rust or filler found in the roof gutters. There are large windows either side in the rear so passengers in the back feel less like they’re being kidnapped. Completing the look is a set of period 15” Dragway wheels with white lettered tyres.

Inside the van has a cool period custom trim that was done in the US. Up front there are two bucket seats finished in brown velour. In front of the driver sits a metal flake Mooneyes steering wheel mounted to a tilt column and there are billet pedals on the floor. For comfort inside there is air conditioning which is well serviced and icy cold. Luxury features include cruise control, power steering, power windows and central locking. The whole floor of the van is covered in brown carpet and there is a full length headliner and wall coverings. In the back there is an opening in the roof for extra air flow, removable table and the rear seat folds down into a bed. There are tie down points in the open section in the middle of the van if you need to carry something. We all know you need tunes when road tripping down the highway and these are supplied by a CD head unit with two 6” front speakers and two 6×9’s in rear doors.

Powering Brown Sugar is a 350ci Chevy V8 engine which was fitted to the van as a crate engine prior to it being imported into the country. The engine is paired to a four speed automatic transmission which is column shifted. The suspension and brakes are believed to be factory items with discs up front and drums in the rear. While there are dummy side pipes for looks there is a full exhaust that runs underneath the car and exits out the back.

These 80s American custom vans are absolute freedom machines! They are built to road trip around and eat up the highway. Brown Sugar is a great example of a period custom van loaded with a bunch of great features.
