1979 HOLDEN UTE
This Holden HZ ute has a gone through a full restoration and has a pretty cool story. Project Rebuild was launched in 2014 by Senior Constable Matt Ellis and the Cessnock PCYC Youth Command as a way to affect positive change among young offenders and youth at risk. It began with a number of local kids being involved in the rebuilding of the PCYC centre itself, with some of the participants ending up with building apprenticeships. This project saw five local boys aged 15-17, with the assistance of professionals, restoring and mildly customising a 1979 Holden HZ ute. Supported by a long list of sponsors including Rare Spares, Rocket Industries, Repco, Eastside Kustoms, Coalfields Classic Vehicle Restoration, MOB Engines, Muscle Car Parts and many other local businesses, the project started with the donation of the HZ ute by Cessnock City Motor Group. Barely more than a rolling shell with a tired red six up front, the Holden had no front sheet metal, interior or swinging panels, and needed a lot of work. After an extensive 18 months’ work, the ute was finally finished and the group of young men involved were exposed to various facets of the motor industry and learned valuable new hands-on skills. The project and build was featured in Street Machine Magazine and the car was then Auctioned by Shannons Auctions in 2018 where the proceeds went back to the PCYC for future projects.
The body of the car is almost all HQ in appearance, it features a HQ Premier front end, HQ GTS guards, is finished in a HQ only colour of Lettuce Alone and features HQ Sandman rainbow striping. The chrome front and rear bumpers were replaced and the car presents very nicely externally. Inside the tub is as nicely painted as the exterior and hasn’t been used to haul anything in years. The ute sits over a set of 17” genuine American Racing GTS style wheels which we think suits the car to a tee!
Inside the interior is back to HZ and has been completely refinished in Black which ties in perfectly with the Sandman striping on the outside. The interior features bucket seats, console along with a GTS dash and steering wheel. The carpets, kick panels, sil moulds etc were all replace during the build.
Under the bonnet is a fresh 308ci V8 paired to a 3 speed automatic transmission. MOB Engines built the new 308ci Holden V8 for the project, which features a 600cfm carb and Edelbrock Performer manifold, Gilmer drive, MSD ignition and Pacemaker headers. Practically everything on this car was new when it was built. Pulling everything up is power assisted disk brakes on the front with drums on the rear.
This is one cool Holden ute with a great story that has helped a lot of young people’s lives. The car is striking in appearance and a blast to drive. We don’t expect this one to last long so reach out if you want to have a chat about the car or would like to make an appointment to view it in person.
