This 1979 Ford F100 pick up has been through a ground up rebuild to transform it from farm truck to Street Machine. When the current owner purchased the truck it was a survivor style truck with a big canopy on the back, running a 351ci Cleveland V8, 4 speed manual and I beam front axle. Initially, he made a few modifications and drove the truck around for around 18 months before deciding to pull it off the road and go for a full build.

The job was tasked to Graham at Down Town Kustoms in Taree, NSW who began R&D into a full custom chassis. Taking inspiration from some high quality F100’s in the states, the owner wanted the truck slammed low to the ground but also be high performing and extremely reliable. Down Town Kustoms set out designing a new independent front end for the truck to pair with their full rear clip with triangulated four-link. Because the truck needed to be comfortable and reliable to drive anywhere, Graham spent extra time in CAD to simulate the chassis so it would drive correctly, get the power to the ground and be reliable and useable. It also needed to be able to get full lock without any components clashing, such as caliper to control arm; ball joint cup to brake rotor; steering arms to sway-bar linkages. The rear also had a lot of thought put into it to allow the bag-on-arm set-up to give the appropriate lift, make it a comfortable ride and also have very little squat in order to get the power down. The result is a truck that lays chassis to the pavement that’s to Slam bags all round, AccuAir endo tank and e-level air management.

Lift the bonnet and you will find Ford’s 315kW, supercharged 5.0-litre Coyote V8 engine known as the ‘Miami’. The engine was sourced from a 2011 FPV GS sedan along with the factory ZF six-speed automatic transmission. Power is fed to the rear wheels through a Ford 9 inch diff built by Geelong Diffs. The conversion parts sourced from the FPV also included the a/c parts, wiring and radiator which were all used in the truck. Even the power steering and air con lines are all FG GS items which means they’re off-the-shelf parts if you even need spares. A custom Xforce twin 3” stainless exhaust helps to expel gasses. Pulling up all of the power is a set of Wilwood disc brakes on all four wheels.

Outside, the plan was always to keep the truck with its survivor look rather than going for shiney paint work. The main reason for this is that the truck was always intended to be driven and used. The original bed floor has been lifted with bigger tubs and modified to open in order reveal the extensive work underneath. The truck is slammed over a set of custom steelies measuring 20×8” up front and 20×10” in the rear. Inside has also been kept neat and subtle with a neatly trimmed bench seat, tilt steering column and Lokar floor shifter. The dash houses a custom set of Dakota Digital gauges made to look as close to factory as possible. The rear window has a venetian blind to complete the look.

This truck is built to be driven with an incredible amount of design and engineering going in to create a one off custom sleeper.
