This 1978 Porsche 911SC has been through an extensive rebuild and transformed into a 964 turbo, widebody steel guard tribute. The car started life as a US market coupe and was comprehensively converted to a right hand drive steel guard wide body cabriolet in the 1990s using genuine Porsche parts. There were only a handful of 964 turbo cabriolets ever made by Porsche and naturally they fetch astronomically high prices. This is the next best thing and some would argue, a more usable and purer analogue experience. The car provides the best of both worlds with a well sorted 911SC base but featuring the hot rodded, wide body styling of the 964 turbo but without complicated electronics and costly dollar suck that can be associated with the later model generations.

Starting with the body, not much of the original sheet metal remains. At some stage in the 90s the car was professionally converted into a Cabriolet and fitted with Turbo style front and rear guards. Sheet steel modifications having been carried out using genuine Porsche components and welded to various locations in accordance with Porsche instructions. Engineering approval was subjected to an official conversion assessment and includes the removal of rear seats to a two-seater status and a change of track to larger wheels configured to fit the widebody conversion. Paintwork has been professionally refinished and is a factory 964 turbo colour of Midnight blue metallic. 964 turbo front and rear bumpers with front fog light delete and 964 whale tail complete the clone. The convertible top mechanism is genuine Porsche and has a new black cloth convertible top fitted. Completing the look externally is a set of Porsche Cup, Kerscher 18″ Speedline 3-piece wheels.

Inside the car has been professionally converted over to right hand drive. The seats are factory Porsche buckets and neatly finished in black leather. The car was converted to a two-seater during the rebuild and the rear seat replaced with a custom speedster style double roll bar setup. The carpets have been replaced and there is a Bluetooth hands free stereo, with Rockford Fosgate speakers and under seat subwoofer for pumping your favourite sounds when cruising. Power windows are a nice luxury touch and for the days when its too hot to have the top down, the car is fitted with a fully refurbished air conditioning system to keep the cabin temps in check.

Powering the beast is a rebuilt and heavily upgraded high comp, twin spark, 3.0L Porsche flat six engine. The engine was rebuilt by Promotive engineering in Brisbane in 2021. The rebuild value was around $50,000 and included a twin spark setup with coil packs, sports cam, EFI conversion and ceramic coated exhaust system. A new high torque starter motor was also installed in 2024. The car was dyno tuned by Godzilla Motorsports where it made 209.7hp at the rear wheels and developed strong power all the way up to its electronically limited 7,200 rpm redline. The engine is paired to the factory five speed manual transmission which was also received a partial rebuild in 2021. The underside of the car is well presented with the chassis only travelling approximately 100,000 kms from new and only 10,000kms on the rebuilt engine.

Classic Porsches are renowned for their raw driving experience and this car provides exactly that. No cup holders, no back seats, just a roll cage, a manual transmission, a tough flat 6 engine with a 7,200 rpm redline and the wind in your hair. The owner tells us that the car grabs attention everywhere it goes and while he has owned some extremely nice cars, this one is universally appreciated and admired where ever he takes it. He informs us that he has spend $10,000 in the last six months preparing the car for sale so that the new owner can enjoy it without the need to worry about anything other than basic maintenance. The sale comes complete with a large receipt file and engineering documentation from the wide body and cabriolet conversion.
