This 1974 Ford Falcon XB GT Hardtop was manufactured in Ford’s Broadmeadows assembly plant in Victoria. The car was completed in February of 1974 before being shipped off to Western Australia to be sold new by Challenger Ford in Rockingham. The car is a genuine JG66 GT Hardtop and was very well optioned with Ford confirming it was one of one built in the exact specification. Decoding the build plate, the car was a (T) code 351ci V8 4V with a (L) 4 speed manual transmission, finished in (U) Burnt Orange with (K) code Brown vinyl interior. The car was delivered with the following options 03 – seat belts, 10 – Windback sun roof, 11 – Laminated tintband windscreen, 40 – Integrated air conditioning, 46 – power windows, 55 – Tutone bonnet paint and 72- Radio/Cassette player.

The car was purchased by the current owner in February of 1993 “off a bloke in Brisbane from an add in the Trading post”.  The car was an incomplete project that someone had stripped down and repainted in its original colour before losing interest and never put the car back together. There was no interior other than the dash, the body was very good though and it came with the original engine which was now fitted with 2V heads as well as a C4 automatic transmission. The factory 9 inch diff was still under the car. While it would have been nice to have the 4V heads and original top loader, at the time he wasn’t concerned and decided he would rebuild the car using what came with it.

It was a slow project, he worked on it intermittently for five years or so having to source a bunch of parts that were missing. He sourced some Globe wheels along with new seats and interior pieces. The original engine block was sent off to be rebuilt with a few upgrades including being bored 30 thou, high comp pistons, new crank and Moroso rockers. The brake lines were missing so they were fully replaced as well as the booster and master cylinder. The interior was retrimmed at Currumbin trimmers in a velour style fabric. The project then sat dormant for a few years while he built another house and family life took priority.

Eventually the engine went back into the car and there was a push to get the car completed to use in his son’s wedding. The car was completed in time and finally hit the road in 2018. Since then the car has received a few minor updates with a Bluetooth capable CD player and some 6x9s in the rear parcel shelf as well as the battery being relocated into the boot with new LED boot light. The air conditioning remains in place but would require some minor attention to be functional again. Condition wise, it should be noted that there are some dents around the car, mostly in the roof area that you may or may not pick up in the pictures. The car has been driven to a few Hardtop Hustles, a bunch of other events having travelled an estimated 8-10,000km since completion.

Genuine GT Hardtops are certainly thin on the ground these days and this one had some great factory options. The car is neatly presented but not so correct or perfect that you need to lock it away in a museum. This car is destined to be out and driven, just the way they were intended.
