This 1974 Ford Falcon XB GT Hardtop was manufactured in Ford’s Broadmeadows assembly plant in Victoria. The car was completed in February of 1974 before being shipped off to Western Australia to be sold new by Challenger Ford in Rockingham. The car is a genuine JG66 GT Hardtop and was very well optioned with Ford confirming it was one of one built in the exact specification. Decoding the build plate, the car was a (T) code 351ci V8 4V with a (L) 4 speed manual transmission, finished in (U) Burnt Orange with (K) code Brown vinyl interior. The car was delivered with the following options 03 – seat belts, 10 – Wind back sunroof, 11 – Laminated tint band windscreen, 40 – Integrated air conditioning, 46 – power windows, 55 – Tutone bonnet paint and 72- Radio/Cassette player.

The previous owner of this car had owned it since 1993 having slowly restored the car over that time. When he purchased it, the car was an incomplete project that someone had stripped down and repainted in its original colour before losing interest and never put the car back together. There was no interior other than the dash, the body was very good though and it came with the original engine and heads but was now fitted with a C4 automatic transmission. The factory 9 inch diff was still under the car. While it would have been nice to have the original top loader, at the time he wasn’t concerned and decided he would rebuild the car using what came with it.

The original engine block was sent off to be rebuilt with a few upgrades including being bored 30 thou, high comp pistons, new crank and Moroso rockers. The brake lines were missing so they were fully replaced as well as the booster and master cylinder. The project then sat dormant for a few years while he built another house and family life took priority. Eventually the engine went back into the car and there was a push to get the car completed to use in his son’s wedding. The car was completed in time and finally hit the road in 2018.

Since then, the car has continued to be improved with the interior being retrimmed back to a factory look but in black. It’s now a very nice place to be especially with factory power glass and wind back sunroof! A Bluetooth capable CD player and some 6x9s in the rear parcel shelf allow for some tunes while driving. The air conditioning system remains in place but would require some minor attention to be functional again. The battery was relocated into the boot with new LED boot light fitted. The engine bay was brought back to a factory style presentation. A new set of 12 slot wheels were fitted to the car with widened rears to fill out the big guards the way they should have been from factory. The car has been driven to a few Hardtop Hustles, a bunch of other events having travelled an estimated 8-10,000km since completion.

Genuine GT Hardtops are certainly thin on the ground these days and this one had some great factory options. As part of our due diligence on high end muscle cars, we had the car inspected and independently verified by ICAARS. This inspection confirmed the car, body and stampings to be correct original GT but also identified the tags as reproductions of the originals. For this reason we have removed the ADR tag from the car and it will be provided along with the sale.  The Ford confirmation letter is also provided in the documentation.

Please note: Unfortunately due to time constraints, the restored original XB power window door trims didn’t make it in time for our photo shoot and we’ve had to photo it with a set of manual window trims. The fully restored correct power window door panels will be fitted to the car prior to it leaving for its new home. We will update the pictures here as soon as they arrive and are fitted to the car.
