This 1973 Holden LJ Torana S Sedan has been fully rebuilt into a custom street machine. The car was purchased by the current owner approximately four years ago. Previous owner’s father was said to be the original owner of the car with his son purchasing it off him and modifying it in the 90s. Back then it was built with a 308ci V8 and was featured in Street Machine in 1999 wearing the plates “TORRIE”.  During the current ownership the car has been given a complete overhaul with new paint, interior, engine and wheels.

Starting with the body, the car was sent to Currumbin Auto Body in late 2022 for a full repaint in Holden Sting Red. The body remains mostly factory with the addition of a hornet scoop on the bonnet and flush mounted fuel cap in the rear. The chrome bumpers have been refinished front and rear and the lights all converted over to LEDs. The car sits on a set of Intro Vista billet wheels measuring 17×7” up front and 18×10” in the rear. The entire car has been ceramic coated by Scratch Away detailing.

Inside the car received a full custom interior by Monkey Boyz auto trimming. The front seats have been replaced with Recaro buckets  that have been retrimmed in black with red stitching. The rear bench has also been trimmed to match with Holden emblem embroidery. The door trims and parcel shelf continue the custom red and black theme. A custom centre console houses the B&M automatic shifter and there are a bunch of Autometer gauges to keep an eye on what’s happening under the hood. For tunes while cruising there is a Kenwood media player with aftermarket speakers and amplifiers along with USB ports in the console. The boot is neatly carpeted inside with Amps mounted behind the seats and battery relocated from the engine bay.

Under the bonnet lives a fully built 355ci Holden V8 stroked engine by Mad Racing Engines. The engine build features a 308 block, bored 60thou w/Harrop stroker crank (355ci), 12.5:1 compression, half filled with “Hard Blok” grout for strength, Eagle H-Beam rods, SRP forged 383 pistons, rope seal block running Buick neoprene seal conversion, Chrysler big block oil pump with HCE adaptor, Camtech cam, Crower solid roller lifters, oil gallery modifications for priority feeding to cam bearings, double row master timing chain set, Romac harmonic balancer, high performance flex plate, Yella Terra high flow push rods, The heads are Yella Terra Dash 9 aluminium VN Style that have been ported and polished, with large valves and Yella Terra roller rockers. The engine is topped with a port matched Harrop single plane high rise manifold and APD billet carburettor 950cc with fuel rail and fuel pressure gauge. Spark is provided by an MSD Blaster coil with MSD leads, 6AL ignition box and Procomp billet distributor with MSD Internals. The engine is fitted with aluminium valve covers, a new Hi-flow CVR electric water pump, Chubb Fabrications billet timing case, Gilmer drive (Alternator only), a Castlemaine Rod Shop gear reduction starter motor and a Bosch 130 Amp alternator. The engine bay itself is smoothed and painted body colour with hidden wiring, billet hinges and polished stainless overflows. Exhaust gases escape through 1 and 7/8” four into one custom extractors, slip jointed and ceramic coated into a dual 3” custom mandrel bent exhaust with crossover and Hurricane mufflers. The exhaust runs under the diff for easy removal of rear mufflers at the diff for extra noise at shows or car events.

The engine is paired to a Holden Trimatic auto trans that has been rebuilt and extensively upgraded by Russells Auto Transmission Specialists. The trans received a malualized valve body with extra clutches added, spring tensions and valve body modified for stronger shifting, B&M Mega shifter and cooled with an Aeroflow oil cooler with braided lines. There is a very streetable Dominator 4100 rpm stall converter. Power is fed to the rear wheels through a Strange Engineering 3” tail shaft with 1350 yolks into a shortened nine-inch diff with 3.55 Richmond gears, Full Spool locker and 31 spline axles. The suspension has been upgraded with McDonalds Bros Racing tubular upper and lower control arms, Nolathane bushes and Strange Coil overs in the rear. The rear end uses McDonal Bros wheel tubs to the chassis rails. The brakes have been upgraded with a Wilwood Boosterless master cylinder and proportioning valve into BA falcon front discs and HQ Holden drums in the rear.

Since completion the car has been enjoyed out at car shows and events where it has won a number of awards including Top 15 at real steel and chrome fest late last year, best car in show at Cruise for Dementia and best in show at the Southport Rockabilly festival 2023 just to name a few.
